------题目------
Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct.
------正文------ 485 words
I concede that the extinction of lesser-known languages is an irredeemable tradegy for their culture associated. However, it is inappropriate for government to take the protection of such languages as its responsibility, for the protection will defeat the fundamental goal of languages and prove itself no more than an utopia in the age of globalization.
Since the dying languages actually represent a culture, few of us will deny that the extinction of certain lesser-known languages is a loss for human civilization. With the extinction of the languages,( certain ideology, which can only be expressed in the language,用其他语言也可以表达阿) will never be understood by our descendants. Moreover, as the most distinctive emblem for a group, upon which a self identity is established, a language's extinction will surely bring about a diminished cultural identity, and then a diminished sense about who we are.
However, taking the protection of such language as a responsibility of government is inappropriate, both from the normative and practical point of view. From the normative point, the fundamental function of language is to facilitate communication, while the existence of less-known languages serves to barrier effective communication at the age of globalization. (Moreover, serving primarily as a emblem for a different culture, the distinct languages present a gap between different culture even result in certain cultural shock, 这个观点不是很赞同,语言不一定会造成cultural shock)which will surely breed misunderstanding and distrust by human beings' xenophobic nature. The mistrust is likely to escalate itself to quarrels and even a war. Though seems far-fetched, the risk is actually innate in the existence of lesser-known languages.
From the practical point of view, by protecting the dying language, the government seems to be deploying a falling battle. Different from other emblem of a culture, languages can not be preserved in a museum--that is only by being spoken can a dying language get preserved. The government, however, can not coerce their citizens to speak such languages, for (the use of different languages actually enhances the cost of daily communication为什么呢?). Furthermore such coercion is a brutal violation of the freedom of citizens, which is the last choice of any democratic system. Moreover, under the circumstance of globalization, predominant cultures exert an increasingly significant impact on the less-known languages. It becomes more and more difficult for a government to protect a dying language, if the protection breeds too much opportunity cost--that is abusing precious public resources on an unworthy goal while left other pressing problem such as unemployment, poverty, and so forth unaddressed, the government seems to give priority to history at the expense of the prosperity of modern society.(后面两个观点不错,挺有说服力)
In final analysis, I concede that the extinction of less-known languages is an irredeemable loss for their accompanying culture. It is necessary to note that taking the protection of such languages as a responsibility of government is inappropriate, for the action will surely go against the trend of globalization by coercion, let alone its significant opportunity cost.
(总的来说写得蛮好,我对几个观点性的问题提出了一些意见,--opportunity cost我觉得蛮好,我也用过,加油!~~~ps:我这几天拍了你好几次了,你也拍拍我的文章吧) |
