74. "The most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is through the use of images, not language."

Image is language that evokes one or all of the five senses: seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and touching. When you stand before the Mona Lisa's smile, a strong feeling of astonishing, cheerful, and mystery may grab your heart, which is the effect of information conveyed by image. Yet language can also stir people's senses, imagination and deep thinking that belonged to every reader. Anne Frank's dairy brought us more deep sense of guilty and regret than many pictures during the world war two did. When the war began, she was a little girl; when it ended, she was the voice of a generation. Her eager for surviving, aspiration for freedom, and the willingness to peace gave us great shack, and all these rich emotions are expressed through language to modern people. Thus, images and languages both give us pathways to communicate efficiently for their distinct advantages.

Image is a intuitionistic, attractive way of communication which can transcends the state, the nation, and even the earth. For instance, a large groups of people from different state or countries may speak different language, and translation is always not timely and precisely, on the contrary, images are the universal language that can be understood among them. So it is usually use slides, and short video to do presentation at some international conference. And the silent films, say, gold rush, modern times, and kids, made by Chaplin are very popular around the world without the help of voice and didn't make any miss understanding. In this sense, images surpass languages; moreover, images can't even be taken place by language in the case of designing picture. If the planer wants to tell others what is his design of some new style of clothes, building structure, interior decoration, image is possibly the only way to express this ideas, because that it is very unlikely to convey colors, ideas, and structure in language. So image is an essential ingredient in the recipe for communication.

On the other hand, language has its uses when it comes to some complex and abstruse problems. The theories in our textbook, say, the conservation of energy, can hardly be learned by images. We need the literal explanation and proving to understand them. Besides, as the Freud say, (and I paraphrases) words have a magic power. They can bring either the greatest happiness or deepest despair: can transfer knowledge from teachers to students, words enable the orator to sway his audience and dictate its decisions. Words are capable of arousing the strongest emotions and prompting all man's actions. Thus, language are not merely commendable choice but necessary components of effective communication.

For their distinct advantage, image and language are most effective when they combined together. Coupled with text, pictures enhance the power of written word. The graphic designers solve problems, organize space, and imbue their work with those liberal qualities that enable it to convey verbal information, such as the idea of the design, the precise dimension, which can't expressed by images clearly. Another case in point is doing presentation; the presenter always shows his slides with verbal explanation. And the literal contents can have intuitive properties, which empower them to communicate easily. For example, the abstruse theory are always accompanies by some graphics to illustrate or help understanding.

Therefore, images and languages are not mutually exclusive, but on the contrary, they reinforce one another. When human being want to communicate with the out space creature, people sent the images of human body structure and the language of many countries into the universe, so we can make the conclusion that the combination of images and languages are always the most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people.

Mencius said,"When heaven is about to confer a great office on any man,it first exercises his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil.It exposes his body to hunger………….By all these methods, it stimulates his mind, consolidates his character, and increases his efficiency".
