The speaker asserts that a successful public leader must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards. I agree with this statement with my own reservation. A leader must always bear in mind a high moral and ethical standard, but not necessarily the highest开头很简洁有力,直切主题,比我喜欢用的那种试图用一些长句子以情动人的方式要好,因为机考时不一定能临时想出那样的东西。 .
On the one hand, there are at least two reasons for the leader wanting to perform effectively must maintain certain level of ethics and moral. First, a high ethical and moral standard wins the respect and trust of both his underlings and outsiders’outsiders. Such respect and trust is indispensable for even an average leader, let alone an effective leaderone. , the voters elect one as the leader because they trust him or her. Also, if the underlings trust the leader, they will carry out the leader’s instruction more ardently, thus prompting the efficiency of the organization, whether it is a government, a company or a school. Second, the leader hold supreme authority in his department and most of his/her behavior depend on his/her intentions. A fundamental set of moral regulations prevents him/her from abusing power and dereliction of duty. Moreover, a higher level of moral beliefs propesl him to perform better. For instance, in the government, one leader of average moral standard may boast that he himself never corrupts. And这里是不是用一个转折词更好些? beside this, one leader of higher level moral will feel the moral duty to discoverydiscover and punish other’s illegal behaviors, which he can overlook我觉得ignore更好些,因为这里是指领导故意视而不见,而overlook是没注意到的忽视。. Obviously the latter leader can keep the government more open and more effective. In short, a leader should adhere to a high standard of moral and ethical for sake of both winning support from his underlings, and refraining from an inept reputation.
On the other hand, while we place sufficient emphasis on the importance of moral and ethic for a leader, we should not forget that 1) a public leader is not a moralist, and that 2) the highest moral and ethic standard alone cannot make a effective leader.
Since leaders are not moralist (with the exception of spiritual leader), their effectiveness should not be evaluated by their moral standard, but by how can they they cankeep their organization function smoothly and advance in their performance. Except his/her special position, a leader is no more than commonplace person –person who may also commit moral flawsflaw在这里似乎不太恰当,我查Webster's,flaw的意思是 an imperfection or weakness and especially one that detracts from the whole or hinders effectiveness eg vanity was the flaw in his character,就是说它主要指缺陷,一般是内在固有的,可能不能与commit搭配吧. Such slight moral flaw does not harm their achievements as a leader, on the contrary, it draws them near to us. General Barton was criticized for his rudeness and proud, but it iswas General Barton who leadedled the Allied Army Alliesto enter Nazis Germany in 1945. As forefor the second statement mentioned above, the effectiveness of a leader depends on many aspects, such as special knowledge, management ability, moral standard and so on. Despite little moral drawbacks, a leader can make good use of other advantages, still being an effective leader. One example was about John Davison Rockefeller, the commercial genius in the American history. He created his petroleum empire in several decades, which provesproved his leading ability. However, his success is not necessarily related to his moral standard but to his insight and shrewdness as a merchant. In fact, his commercial activities manifests shocking cruel and somewhat immoral behavior-such as collaborating with government officers. This illustrate that the highest moral standard is not indispensable for a effective leader.
To sum up, for a effective leader, a fundamental set of moral and ethic principles is necessariesnecessary是形容词,如果要与下面luxuries对映该用necessities while the highest moral and ethic standard is luxuries. After one gets necessaries, he can also pursue luxuries but it is not compulsory.
