Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.
------正文------
Whether do these nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a vital role in society? Different people may have different opinions. As far as I am concerned due to my own observation of life, I fundamentally agree with the notion that these areas do play an important role in human history, yet with the development of the technology and the knowledge scale of human being, these nonmainstream areas would be replaced by technology more and more. In the following discussion, I would like to present my point of view.
First of all, due to the curiosity of human being and the limit of the science and technology, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry played an important role in human history. In the ancient times, people knew little about the nature and the world. When people that times didn't understand some natural phenomenon, they would probably think it was due to the power of the jinni. For example, when they saw the phenomenon of sun eclipse, they felt very fear because sun symbolizes a power which could bring them harvest and good life. Nevertheless, they didn't know why the sun suddenly disappeared and then they thought that maybe there was a dog which ate the sun. In fact, people nowadays have known that sun eclipse is due to moving of the objects in the universe. Moreover, people at that time knew little about the seasons and the weather which set great influence to their crops. Thus they usually prayed to the god for a good harvest. Furthermore, when somebody wanted to know his future, he would probably ask the people who were known access to the god for help. All the above mentioned evidence have shown that the existence of these nonmainstream areas was because the limit of the knowledge of human to the nature.
Although these nonmainstream areas of inquiry have existed for several thousand years, they have not made conspicuous contribution to the society. Instead, the newly-born modern technology, which states its power with facts, is easier to be accepted by the people. Modern science and technology have developed at an unbelievable speed during last several hundreds of years. They make us understand the essence of the nature and the world we are living more clearly and make use know something we did not know before and more importantly it has brought a trend which changes the way people think and act. For example, when people get sick, instead of pursuing a psychic cure or pray for the help of the jinni, they would go to the hospital and receive a treatment of modern medicine. These changing are due to the development of modern science and technology. In that matter, technology fundamentally changes our life, our vision, and our manner to deal with problem.
Finally, I should say, some nonmainstream areas of inquiry still existed in our contemporary life and this is probably because our knowledge of science still has limits to some extent. Though we are much more advanced than our forefathers, there still exist some problems and phenomena which could not be explained by more science. For example, nobody would know what the black hole really is and how it appears. However, just as the progress human have made before due to the curiosity to the unknown world, more progress and development of science and technology would be achieved in the future. I think, some problems which have not been solved nowadays would be settled in the near future and the process of human progress just reflects the exploration to the nature.
To sum up, due to the above mentioned evidence, which sometimes intertwine to form an organic whole and thus more persuasive than any one of them, we may comfortably arrive at the conclusion that though these areas do play a crucial role in human history, they would be gradually replaced by technology in the near future. |
