The speaker asserts that children today are not socialized well to adapt to our society, which would bring negative effects to the societal development. In my view, although children today seem to be not socialized well, they could still adapt to our society and we should not use the outdated criteria to judge our children.

It might seem tempting to agree with the speaker, on the basis that socialization is vital for everyone in the society. After all, human beings are social animals, which could not live without interaction with the community. This is also the requirement of our work. A white-collar has to communicate with clients; a worker on the assembly line has to cooperate with his co-workers; a scientist has to lead his research team. In a word, we cannot image the world without communication and cooperation. A famous professor in my college says:" Only God could live all by himself." Therefore, socialization is a key to survival in a society.

The speaker's assertion is also true that contemporary children are interacting less with others. With the advancement of technology, internet enable children to easily access information while staying at home by either web surfing or online chat, while children in the 1980's or earlier had to go to the library or talk with a real person in order to learn, which requires much more communication skills. At that time, it was unimaginable how one could work properly or even live without adequate social communication with the society. In addition, computer games have brought children a good choice of recreation, instead of going out to play with other kids. As a result, the extent of socialization of children today-communication, cooperation, social responsibility and sympathy-- has been dramatically weakened.

However, such changes are attributed to the social trend of modernization and globalization, characterized by the fashion of more emphasis on individualism, which is an inevitable result of economic development in the information era. Admittedly, such changes will render children a weaken ability of communication and cooperation. Yet the social requirement has also changed. The apparent symptoms may only be the outcome of judging children today with the outdated criteria of the past. It is just this changes that will make children better adaptation to the society. After all, they are not completely unsocialized.

A society is never developing in a planned and predetermined way. The construction of our society is like building a huge architecture, growing ever more complicated and never finished. As the future of any nation, children are the hope of a society, having complete rights to develop the world in their own way, even though such development may be dramatically different from the current one we live. Our worry about their adaptability is merely unnecessary because the old standard of judgment would never fit the fast changing world. Instead, we should be confident that children today would have a brilliant future with the society of their own, not ours.

In the final analysis, the speaker's statement is partly true. Socialization is important for a society, and children today tend to be less capable of communicating and cooperating. Yet with the changing society, we should be confident of their adaptation to the world.
