"So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present.

the world is changing from time to time .Everything will becomes historical but does that mean there is no guidance function of the past? I fundamentally disagree that.

Admittedly, the social is more complex than ever through a evolvement of billions of years. that is to say , the culture today is a disposition of human's long history. supposing, there is no Edison, how can we are still under bright though in dark night. what's more , the heritage Edison left to us is not mere thousands of inventions but also the spirit to improve our life quantity and the admit of human's intelligence and diligence. thus, we can think about many behoof of understanding of the past ,and I will state my opinion in following points.

to begin with, understanding of past provides us experience of forefathers to help us solve the contemporary issue. when we face problems ,from domestic trivia to international issues, there is always a way out of the past experience. for instance, there is a conflict between America and Middle East countries recently .It seems that the cause of it is the Bush Government's power politics. but after our contemplate, we will find the critical cause can date back to the early 90's last century when there were battles in middle east. to solve the issue of Middle East today, we have to trace back to the past to find the answer. It is also the case of two families' feud .to better support this view, one can look no further than the relationship among countries after three world wars. from the wars, we learn that the peace is the theme of contemporary era and we should cherish  it and keep it at present. so the past experience teaches us not only what to do but also what not to do at present.

secondly, understanding of past helps us establish a sense of responsibility. According to Marslow's Hierarchy, people need to be recognized and need responsibility. studying past can encourages us follow good habits to keep the word in order. whether   the industrialist, or lawyer ,even political leaders must understand the past of their calling. Through doing so, they can know the importance of their role is in the whole development of the calling, and thus work hard to assume their responsibility. moreover, the understanding of past provide the advance process of countries. one can better understand how recent changes may affect the destiny of the country and lives of citizens through understanding the past of his or her country.
  
in the final analysis, I would point out the understanding of past can make our life colorful. the historical stories can immerse people in the quite remote pasts, and remove them form immediate, present society. they can enjoy other people's real life. and the art based on understanding of past can satisfy our aesthetic and humanistic need. For example, we can be moved by the Irland hero in the "brave heart" and feel the humanity moral idendity in the film.

In sum, the statement ignores the importance of understanding of the past in our life today. the meaning of history cannot be found in the mere history itself(the objective description of past events), we can think about the past based on the opinion of human essence and destiny, further on the reason-and -effect concept.

这一段你其实说的是the past benefit present lives，而不是说understanding past，结尾虽然提到，但是你的论述是偏的，如果你改变一下你的用句，应该能回到这个意思上面，因为这个例子可以用，只是你没有着重从understanding上去写
