50.In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
1 学术活动不应该局限于校园,所以应该鼓励教职工去从事学术界之外的职业
2 特别是对于应用性质或者公共事业性质的学科应该和社会紧密相连
3但是对于一些纯理论研究的学科这样做会分散教师精力,进而影响学术研究。

The college faculty should be required to spend time working in professions

It brings benefits to both university faculty and the students for encouraging more college faculty to work outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. By doing so, the methods of the teaching be adjusted and the content they teach be updated or became more flexible. However, it is controversial whether all faulty should be required to do so.

The problem that what the college students learn from the school is far from enough to meet the demands of the society has grown sharply and aroused people’ attention. This problem may attribute to the out-of-date textbooks or lacking of the advance teaching equipment. The main reason for such problem may be the lacking of consciousness of putting what their learned into practice. By encouraging the university faculty to working in professions may remedy this lacking. Faculty who work in professions can get the most up-to-date information on the usage of the courses they teach. They may get better understanding on the demands of the society and then make some adjustments in their teaching methods. For example, an English teacher may be aware that the students need ferociously besides the basic skills, such as listening, comprehending, writing, speaking are that the relevant backgrounds knowledge, after he or she plays an role as an interpreter in a business negotiation Then the teacher may add more relevant reference or material books in his or her teaching process to efface the students’ knowledge blank.

Moreover, the faculty of the academic disciplines such as public administration or public health should widen their work on the professions relevant to the course they teach. By working on the relevant professions, the faulty put their major into practice and contribute to the social development. These disciplines should not be confined to the campus of college, they are closely related to the public and should play great role in bringing social benefits.

However, there is no need for all faulty in all academic field be required to do so. Some pure research such as theoretical physics, nuclear energy biochemistry and so on, people in these fields should focus on the theoretical study as well as teaching. Working outside their academic field in professions may distribute their energy and disturb the research process and do no good to improve the quality of instruction.

In summary, to some extent, university faculty have the responsibility to ensure that they are equipped with the most up-to-date knowledge and give the students what they really need in their future career. However, it is too absolute to state that all faculty should be required to working in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

谢谢jason,我觉得你说得很对,我没考虑到整体布局的问题.在这上面上把握得不是很好,还有我的后两段不是少是我写不出来呀,整个儿痛苦的憋出来的.还有你提的那个例子也是很很很不错的,我怎么就没想到呢,太感谢了.
