Some people say that you can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people because the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. In some sense, I agree with this assertion. However, we could not jump to a conclusion just based on observation.
People, who live in different cultures or regimes, would reveal different appearances. As a Chinese old proverb says, eyes are the windows of soul. You can look into his/her mental tone from one's eyes. For instance, people live in poverty would usually convey somewhat sorrow or tiredness because they have to worry about their living nearly everyday while those living without trouble would reveal easiness and enjoyment in their eyes because of their light heart. Moreover, the dress of people would also reflect the ideas and values in a society. Take China for example. At the early stage of People's Republic of China, most of people held the belief that they could share the fortune of the whole society so that every one is equal and should be the same in every aspect. They dressed in the same-sun yat sen's suit or a kind of working clothes in blue. This style of dress seems to the tag of that era. But after the reform in 1979, people have more chances to contact the world and be open-minded than before, they accepted many other values or ideas abroad, and dressed more casually. Nowadays when you walk in the street, you could hardly find that people all dressed in a certain kind of clothes. Furthermore, the act of people would tell us some information. People in the East or in some European countries would advocate the dignity, so they often behave very formally or reservedly. But we would see the opposite cases in the U.S.A where people seem to be more passionate and easy-going because they promote the freedom of everyone. So, I have to concede that, to some extent, we could get the information of ideas and values of a society from the people's appearance and behavior.
However, sometimes, people would not reveal all their attitudes and characteristics in their external appearances because they never mind how to wear or how other people would look on them. In this case, look, dress and act could not reflect the thought of those people. For example, the famous physicist, Einstein, always dressed in old clothes and had his hair long and wild. From a hasty glance, people could hardly know that he was the very man who made great contribution to the world. The casual dress could not follow his casual attitudes in the science or those he back up. He set himself against the nuclear war in his late years. How can we get his idea or value from his appearance? Another famous person, Bill Gates, is always untidy even if he has been the richest man in the world. But he does his work so carefully and strictly which is completely different from his appearance. Thus it can be seen that we could not have a comprehensive understanding about the ideas and values of a society if we only make a judgment from those external factors of people.
Furthermore, there are many other ways could be used to detect a society. For example, from a study of laws, we could know about the rules which people have to abide by and find out the reasons behind the behavior. Or we could look over the culture of a nation which would contain the spirit of a society and be inherited from the ancestors. An overall research would be of great help for understanding a society.
To sum up, we can have a general or simple understanding of a society from the appearance and behavior of its people. Whereas, we could not overlook that there are other more important ways such as law, culture which would have great influence on people. Also, to some people, appearance and behavior do not represent all the features of one. |
