As the trend to be of modernization and globalization is quickening its pace in our world, people might feel their sense of who they are is diminishing. Do people have to refer to their rituals and ceremonies in order to reassure their culture and defined themselves? Fundamentally, I agree with this point of view, they are so necessary that we can not efface them form our life, but I think besides those functions, different rituals and ceremonies of different cultures may also share some similarities.

First of all, rituals and ceremonies can represent some features of a culture and thus can help the owner of this culture learn about their history and some common characteristic. Nearly all the rituals and ceremonies are handed down from our ancestors and thus contend the spirit and other knowledge about a culture. Without the performing of these rituals, people may not be able to understand the essential of their history and civilization, especially in such a fast-developing era, when the trend of globalization and modernization has gradually bridged the gulf between different regions while enlarged the gap between generations. For example, the youngsters of China has been more and more familiar with the western culture, which was illustrated by the popularity gained by the pop-music, western lifestyle etc. But when young people join into the traditional ceremony such as spring festival and dragon boat festival, they are reminded of the special icon of their culture, the dragon, since many activities such as dance with a paper-made dragon show their long respect of such a fantastic animal. In this way, the culture can be preserved when faced with the threat of other culture.

Meanwhile, these rituals and ceremonies can also enhance the sense of self-identify and solidify a grope or a society since it can join those separated acquaintance together, even summon unfamiliar people, on condition that they belong to a same culture. With the fast pace of our nowadays life, people have less time to get touch with their parents, friends, and many other ones, leaving themselves to live a separate life far from each other, in which the face-to-face communication is really cherished. As a result, people make feel lonely and confused sometimes since they cannot get enough self-identification. While the ceremonies and rituals can compensate for this drawback. Nearly all of us have seen the scene of a wedding, or have played apart in it, when nearly all the relatives and friends are introduced to the spot. And that enable them to communicate with each other, get their feeling of belonging to a whole groups, rather than a small boat on the vast ocean. In this case, the rituals and ceremonies help us to define our identity and culture.

However, we should not only see the difference between separate cultures, since everyone come to this world has been called as a human, which indicates that they must share something in common. Thus, the rituals and ceremonies may help them communicate with people from other place, inheriting another culture. For example, sometimes people just find a surprising coincidence that the people from other country celebrity in a similar way as themselves, like weddings and funerals. What's more, they may pay the same respect to some certain phenomena, like the lions, the eagles or cows which is referred by some countries as holy creatures. That's no surprising since these rituals can represent some basic need of all the people, especially those come down from ancient times, when our ancestors share some similar fears and puzzles about the world around them, which gave birth to those rituals and ceremonies. In this respect, those traditional ceremonies may help us better communicate with other culture as they tell us the common spirit in different culture and groups.

As discussed above, it is improper for us to see merely the specialties of ritual and ceremony. On one hand, they can help people identify themselves as well as their culture, in which they can gather people together to pay attention to some common spirit. On the other hand, we can not ignore the mutual things shared by different cultures, societies and groups for they are essentially correlated. On balance, the rituals and ceremonies cannot be confined in a narrow scope but should be regarded as something share by the whole world.
