30"The primary goal of technological advancement should be to increase people's efficiency so that everyone has more leisure time."
正文:
Should the primary goal of technological advancement be to increase people's efficiency so that everyone has more leisure time than ever before , as the speaker contends? In my point of view, although technology can indeed enhance the efficiency of most of work in our daily life especially in contemporary society, it fails to provide us with more leisure time. On the contrary, it makes us busier than ever.
No one can deny that the Main propose of technology is to rise the efficiency of work and level of our life. There is no doubt that a typewriter or a printer save a large amount of time in recording materials compared with written due to the advancement of technology. It takes people much less time to arrive their destination by car than by foot. Moreover, technology provides a more convenient way with human-beings to search the laws of nature. For example, computers and internet make the scientists to calculate a large quantity of data more quickly beyond our imagination. Thus, it is true technology makes the advantage of the world faster and more efficient than ever before.
However, people does not enjoy more time which technology bring to us compared with less leisure time belonging to us. When it comes to this point, there are two examples in two different representative countries. One is that, a survey conducted in 2000 indicates that working time of people engaged in information technology (IT) in USA is increased by 30 percent on average compared with the year before. Another is that, the average working time of people in Hunan, China is 46 hours per week, which means 1.5 hours more than four years before. Therefore, it seems an undoubted fact that the more efficient the world is, the busier we are.
What makes people experience such a busy life? Maybe, it is the technology itself after introspecting this question. Technology presents people a world with a more rapid pace and this is where the problem is. There is a competitive sense of human nature which is ignored by the speaker. With the development of technology, the high efficiency benefits all the people including not only themselves but also their rivals. In order to exceed their rivals in any fields, it is necessary for people to propelling themselves work more efficiently than their competitors, which is the same case in their rivals' mind. Thus, a cycle of competitive in efficiency is accomplished. For instance, Intel and AMD, the two largest producer of CPU in the world, both take their best to enhance their efficiency on producing a more quickly and better CPU than its component. Another instance is about Macdonald and KFC, in pursuing more profits from the customers, both of the companies haste their paces to provide more delicious and cheaper foods. Consequently, it is technology and competitive nature that deprive us of much leisure time.
In sum, I agree with the speaker that the primary goal of technological advancement is to increase people's efficiency. Nevertheless, he overlooks the competitive nature in human beings, which will make them be more desirable in exceeding their rivals and not having a good leisure time.
