136. "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
-------------------------------------------------------------
Some people think we can enjoy the absolute free so that the absence of choice is a very rare circumstance. However, I think, we still encounter many situations in which we have to be controlled without choices.
Maybe it is true because in the contemporary society, people have always enjoyed their free will and use their wisdom to find various alternative solutions towards almost all problems. This circumstance to have abundant choices is very apparent in the science, technological or market realm. For example, when human beings find that resources are so limited to generate electricity for more and more populations in the world, we can figure out the way to make use of natural wind as a supplement to the traditional method. Moreover, when the job market has already attained saturation that it cannot absorb more graduates, the government initiates plan to encourage students to have their own start-ups. In that way, young people can live on themselves by the support of the government, and the troubles due to unemployment have been lessened effectively.
However, I have to say that there’s no absolute free in many fields. If only we live in this society, we have to obey the rules and be controlled relatively. For example, law or discipline is such a thing breaks the illusion that people can have infinite choices. Those who choose to execute criminals like robbery, burglar, theft and so forth out of their willing will be finally put into the prison and be deprived of freedom. Even if a powerful country wants to control other small but identified country by attacking or invasion, it will eventually deserve the bad reputation from the whole international community, lose the credits and esteem from other countries and chastised by the international court. If someone or some country doesn’t want to pay such great costs, they should voluntarily obey the rules and disciplines which have already been set and recognized by the whole society.
Except for the laws, moral is the other element that makes such assertion incredible. We have been educated since we were little kids and been told what is correct or incorrect. It is avoidable that sometimes we will have some bad ideas because of cupidity or even have the impulse to hurt others maybe because of the unfairness we obtain. But if only we are kind of people who are rational to make choices, we will try our best to appease ourselves and exert to find out the right way for solving the problems. That’s morals play the essential role in our minds so that we can control ourselves at best.
In summary, I think we do have the circumstance that we cannot choose. But at the cost of limiting our choices, we gain the whole society with peace, harmony and stability.
