The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Walnut Grove town newspaper.
'Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC's fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ—which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks—has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance.'

The author concludes that Walnut Grove should continue using EZ to collect trash for them, although it raised the money from $2000 to $2500. To support his claim, the author shows us a survey about the satisfaction of EZ and its service. After carefully examining, we can find several critical logical flaws in the letter.

First of all, the author did not say anything about the reason of EZ's raising monthly fee. It is entirely possible that owing to contracting for trash collection in Walnut Grove for ten years, EZ did not feel the pressure about the competition and as a result raising the fee to make more profit.

Secondly, is it necessary to collect trash twice a week? Perhaps only once a week of collecting trash is enough. Therefore, twice a week of trash collection is a waste of time and money. Furthermore, the reason of EZ to order additional trucks is unknown to us. Perhaps it is no need to add any truck for trash collection, even a fleet of 20 trucks is already redundant. Also, we can not rule out the situation that EZ may extend their trash collection service to other towns and 20 trucks is too few for them, so they must add new ones. Thus, these have no causality with the conclusion.

Thirdly, the survey is lack of reliability and dubious. The author did not provide us any data about the survey such as the population who participated.  If only a very few people take part in such as 20 people---the sample size is too small to get the accurate result, we cannot be convinced.  Even the sample size is big enough, can they represent the citizens in the Walnut Grove.  If some of them are in Walnut Grove and others are in other towns, the survey is invalid. Also, maybe the survey was done by the staff of EZ, then it is probable that they did fake result to blind people's eyes. What is more, even if the survey is reliable, yet people have not expressed their thoughts about the fee raising. It is reasonable that they truly satisfied with the service of the EZ but anger with the fee raising.

To sum up, the author's argument is skeptical. To strengthen his assertion, the author should provide us more information about the service compare of EZ and ABC respectively and to testify the necessity of collecting trash twice a week and adding new trucks. Also, we appreciate if the author can give us more detailed data about the survey, for example who did it and who were investigated are they representative of all the residents in Walnut Grove.
