13. Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of the countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct. [8]

家应该采取措施防止这些语言绝迹。
1,有些语言的灭绝是无法挽回的
2,有些语言尽管有衰弱的趋势,但仍然有晚回的可能
3,对于那些消失的语言,我们也需要保留它存在的痕迹
What can we do in facing the extinction of those languages that are used by fewer and fewer people, to give up or to try to rescue them, as the speaker suggests the government should do? In my view, for language serves as the carrier of the culture, if we lose it we will accordingly lose the path in understanding the relevant culture. It is necessary for our government to do something to save it, as least to save it in the museum.
To begin with, in the process of globalization, different languages serve as barriers in communication and message transferring. It is natural that some minor languages are becoming obsolete, limited, or even useless gradually. Just like in biology fields, the law of the survival of the fittest, only the animal or the plant that has the strongest adaptability will survive. For example, mammoth, a titanic animal in the ancient time, even it was once the biggest animal on the land, since it could not evolve with the surroundings, such species finally died out. By the some token, some languages are just as same as the mammoth, through they might once have their times of prosperity, for they cannot evolve with the step of globalization, the only possible ending to them is extinction. It is nothing about money or some other things in material but an unreturnable trend. No one, including the governments, may hardly have any ability to bring their lives back.
On the other hand, despite the trend of globalization, the growing users of English, we still need to keep the culture diversity. Every language stands for its unique culture, together composing the global civilization. To save those languages which might be inclined to depress is our responsibility. Just like saving those animals in danger, through they have a trend of declining, they still have a large enough base amount, if we can feed them well and at the same time strengthen their viability, they might still have a chance to survive in wild. Similarly, for those depressing languages which still have large enough base amounts of users, it is not wise to give them up, instead, the relevant governments have to help them, such as supporting the language education or other measures. At least, to keep a language diversity is also to keep a balance, which is similar to keep a creature diversity and balance in biology area.
The last but not the least, besides to support those hopeful languages, the government also has the crucial responsibility to save something from those once existed but now extinct cultures. Just like to keep the mammoth fossil in the museum, those written materials which were recorded in those extinct languages also should be put in the museum. Maybe, those characters will never be interpreted, it being still necessary for our offspring to know the evolvement history of ourselves, to know their ancestors' wisdom of creating such amusing symbols.
In sum, holding respect to those wise people who created its language and culture, the relevant governments should do some supporting and rescuing or even some commemorating to them, even though some of their foreordination is to extinct. |
