The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.
'Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read costs only $500 per employee—a small price to pay when you consider the benefits to Acme. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course.'

In this argument the author claims that Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of their employees to take the Easy Read course, to reach the assertion the author point out that: Many other companies have recently had greatly improved productivity through having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. The author also point out that: a graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose to vice president of the company. However, there are several problems with the conclusion.

First, lacking the percentage of the companies which have stated gain benefits, we can not correctly assess the result of the course. It is possible only a few of the companies which attend the course think the course is worthwhile and the majority thinks the course is a waste of money.

Secondly, the fact that a graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours and the fact that another graduate rose to vice president of the company can not indicate that their success are result from the course. Maybe the person in the former example did not have any progress at all since he had already could read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours before the course; maybe the reason of the rising of the person in the latter example was that he had a good talent in other aspect but not reading. Thus without the evidence proving that their success are because of the course, the author can not convince me that the course is worthwhile.

Thirdly, granted that the graduates have much progress in the course, lacking the consideration that weather Acme need such course, the author can not make the conclusion that the company need this course. It is possible that the employees of the company have already have a high level in reading, so that they do not need any course at all, it is also possible that the work in Acme do not need a high level in reading, and to send the employees of the company to the course can be a waste. Thus, without a information tell me the condition of the company and its employees, the author can not simply make the decision to send Acme's employees to the course.

Finally, there are still some problems with the assertion, such as the assumption that the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday is suspicious to the workers; lacking evidence to indicate that their employees need much information through reading in their work. Without solving these problems, the author's assertion is suspicious.

In conclusion, to roll out the problems mentioned above to better reach the conclusion, the author need clear evidence including following: the percentage of the companies which have stated gain benefits; the evidence proving that the graduates' success are because of the course; information tell the company need its employees to improve their reading ability.
