"The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
The speaker contends that only the history that is relevant to daily life has value. In my view, the speaker overlooks the long-term value of the study of history which helps establish cognition of one's nation and plan for the future of our human beings.
Admittedly, the study of history that is relevant to our day-to-day lives is of great value. As Bacon once said, histories make men wise. There are great wisdom and principles of the ancestor lying in the history, and through study their masterpieces, we could learn a lot which are of great value in our daily lives. Take example of the works The Art of War from the ancient Chinese author Sun Tzu. Most of today's military commanders and business leaders learn valuable experience and information from this book, and apply them into their own careers. In addition, people read the stories of the famous characters in history, and get inspired from them. A student may establish his goal after knowing the great achievements of some certain great person, and therefore study hard in his daily life. Even when someone is facing some difficulties, he will gain the encouragement and power to overwhelm them as soon as he remembers the heroes' stories. In short, learning history do has great value in our daily lives.
However, the value of study of history will never merely lie in the daily life. The study of history of one's own nation could help one get a full cognition of the country he belongs to. History is like a road map recording how the nation formed and developed into the state as it is, and during this long period, the nation's culture, customs, people's wisdom and spirit are all displayed which are required to be succeeded by the offspring. Thus, the study of history is never only for the day-to-day life but also for accomplishing the mission from our ancestors.
Furthermore, the study of history also helps us plan the futures of our children and the environment which is far beyond the value of the daily life. The study of the history of AIDS could bring about a profound effect on the lives of our offspring in the future, while the researchers' daily lives would never get enhanced by it. The study of the history of species that are at the edge of extinction would help researchers get information about their living conditions and thus the researchers could try saving them from extinction which is of great value for the earth and the human's future. Even the continuous exploring of the outer space and the study of the history of the earth, other celestial bodies and the universe is for finding other habitats for our offspring thousands of hundreds of years later, while these studies are of no value for the researchers' daily lives. Thus, the study of history that is helpful for our offspring in the future is far beyond the value of daily life.
To sum up, the value of studying history does not merely lie in the benefit of the daily lives, but also in the succeeding of nation's culture and spirit and the advantage of the offspring and environment.
