Issue31: Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial.

Making investment is always a hard decision for many investors. The speaker suggests that money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial. I strongly agree with this statement which is full of insights of the progress in the world.

Firstly, in order to make a full understanding of this issue, we should get down to discuss what is research. In my view, a research is relying on something deserving human beings to dig out some inner value which has belied by its useless appearance. Thus before start a research, the results cannot be accurately foreseen by anyone. What we can predict is that the results may bring about benefits for the world today as well as some potential disastrous. However, if it were not the braveness of the prior scientists to design some research, we would not have the comfortable life with lamp, telephone or some other technique appliances today.

Thomas Edison who was one of the greatest scientists investigated various metal materials for identifying a longer life stuff to be the filament of electric bulb. Before his research, nobody can foretell that the result which would have such a lasting value for human beings. However, when he began advocate his plan to the public, even during his research, various opinion amongst people impede the investment from society. Besides this example, numerous experiments were hindered by controversy. However, the result always turned out to be the permanent positive effect to human beings.

From this, we can see that to be called as research, there definitely exist some worthy points in the objects under the research. On the process to the unknown world to some extent can be seen as progress for human. While at most times, and for most people, we do not have the ability to imagine. So money on such researches which subject by some scientists, or sagas, will always be praisable investments.

Admittedly, controversy from the majority people cannot be ignored. The research on genetic engineering is a good case in point. Since the research on DNA and RNA, which are the basic composition of organic creature, voice of supports and oppositions can be heard equally from public. The researchers consider that it will be worthwhile for the finding measures to cure some serious cancers, which now figured as incurable disease. However, public state that it will bring disaster because of the criminals would seize the chance to invent some technical way to destroy human beings. And now some other opponents state that the continuing research on gene would also result in the disturbance of the balance of nature. Nevertheless, thanks to these controversies, people can recognize the research more clearly and the negative effect attracts the scientists attention. So in some aspects, based on the controversy, research may go on still in the right direction which gain the maximum benefits for human beings.

In sum, as long as in a peaceful world where less evil mind people possess, money spent on any research will always be a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial. Because that research is very thing make the world progress, even though sometimes the final goal may be difficult to achieve. Just on the way to ultimate goal, we become increasingly recognize ourselves and make the world more comfortable to live.
