No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study.
According to the speaker, only outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to a field of study can the study advance significantly. I agree with the speaker insofar as this claim concord with our everyday experience and common sense. The knowledge our human beings have hold now is a large web and a specific disciplines is a thread of it which intertwine with others. Therefore, any scientific advance involves with knowledge from many disciplines and the researchers especially the specialist plays an important role in the course of progress.
Take the project of exploring the Mars to find whether there are proofs of life on it for example, it involves specialists from many disciplines, such as biologists, geologists, linguists, astronomers, physics and chemists and so on so forth. The biologists collect information about pressure, weather conditions, water and then extrapolate whether it is suitable for biology to live on and whether there are vestiges of lives. The geologists do some research on the photographs shot by the cameras equipped in spacecrafts and then deduce the characters of the surface on Mars in the past; The people on Mars are thought to be more smart and more intelligent superior than people on earth, if there really have one, so linguists thought they should have a more sophisticated system of language and our human languages can be easily understood by them. Based on this premise, linguists now write some common human language such as hello, how are you in many types of words and carved these words on a large circuit board and then sent the circuit board to space or they simply sending electromagnetic waves containing these words to the outer space, looking forward to getting a reply from the Martian; astronomers research on the regulations of the moving planets and calculate the best landing site for the space detector; physics offer some technical guidance on installing the space detector and meanwhile chemists select and design the best fuel for the detector which need to be light, of low heat ,high density and high energy. Therefore, the project of detecting the life on Mars is not a research learning upon one sole discipline, on the contrary, it requires many authorities from different disciplines to work together to fulfill this challenging assignment.
Another telling example involves the study of traditional literature. Histories, sociologists and litterateurs are all needed in this task. By researching on the classical literatures of a country, we can get acquaintance with a civilization's economy, trades, work habits, life styles and the extent of travel and mobility. Only through combined work can a vivid and comprehensive picture of traditional life displayed to us.
However, if a study was conducted only under a specific discipline, the outcome would be incomplete and presumptuous. The researchers might lose some important clues which can be helpful in explaining a phenomenon or mysterious. Further, there is more likely no any outcomes as there are no sufficient tools to approach it. Therefore, studying in a field without outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field is doomed to fail.
In the final analysis, on area of international inquiry operates in a vaccum. Because the knowledge are inter related to each other, truly understand of a study needs both insiders and outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to the study, only through this way can a study be accomplished. |
