Issue 144
前几天写的,无话可说还跑题了,后来重写,但第二段感觉还是很糟糕,请哪位把那段仔细看看,如可能的话请改改。不胜感激哦!!!
It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value.
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
In the argument, the arguer claims that "It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value". At first glance, it is somewhat reasoned. However, I believe that artists create something of lasting value, but critics also contribute to the process of creation. Both literature and music are important fields in various art fields and so I will illustrate my view through some examples in the two fields.
Classical literatures as the representative of lasting value of literature are created by great litterateurs. Suppose there are no litterateurs, there will be no literature, let alone classical literatures and critics of literature will also lose the objects of their writings. Usually, classical literatures can be contributed to great litterateurs. Tolstoy, an international-famous Russian writer, and his work, War and Peace, are a case in point. It is well known that there were lots of wars when Tolstoy lived. The commons cherished peace and affection while they were often surrounded by war, wound and death etc.. It is Tolstoy that embodied this idea and need of the mass in his novel, War and Peace, which illustrates what is the most important thing for human being. Therefore, the literatures of lasting value can be at least contributed to litterateurs.
As for music, the similar things happen as literatures? No musician, no music. Musical critics maybe hampered the development of music in some cases. For example, when Carmen composed by Bizet, a great French musician, was performed at its first time, almost all musical critics bespattered and attacked it for its style is different from that of the traditional operas. Although Carmen has become the most popular opera in music history now, the musical critics did hinder the progress of opera. Unarguably, it is musician, not musical critic that creates great music in some cases.
However, there is no denying that musical critics also play a positive role in the development of music. It is well known that Bach is a great German musician. However, it is less well known that if there was not a perceptive critic, we may do not know Bach. People forgot Bach and his works immediately after he died. Until a musical critic found out the value of Bach’s works again about one hundred years later, people began to pay attention to Bach again. So we should own lots of to the critics for he or she prevented us from losing a great musician and at least one hundred valuable operas.
Taking into account the analysis above, we may finally arrive at the conclusion that no artist, no art, let alone works of lasting value, but critic can also make a positive effect on the creation of great works and the development of music.
