This is an era of pragmaticism. Almost every goods, virtue, ritual, and event is being judged in the market, and being forced to justified themselves by their cash value. The speaker in the title statement seems to believe that the study of history is no exception. I will argue, however, although the practical value of history study is important in our daily lives, since it can tell us what the origins of our festivals are and what had happened in a famous tour site we are visiting, etc., yet the study of history has its special value far beyond daily pragmatic concerns, a value that is no less significant than that.

To begin with, the study of history can help us better understand the world we are living in. The present is the extension of the past. Without knowing what had happened in the past, one will feel confused when facing the present events. A case in point is the failure of Japan seeking to gain permanent membership in UN Safety Council. Many people cannot understand why all neighbors of Japan are against this proposal, since Japan nowadays is such an economical and martial power. However, the historians can tell them what misery Japanese troops brought to those neighbor countries during the World War II, and why these countries have not forgiven Japan until today. The study of the World War II and many other historical events, in normal days, has no direct value to most people in their daily lives, for it has no cash value to know about the details of a battle or the reasons why some events happened in a place they even never heard of sixty years ago; yet without historians' endeavors on these fields, people could hardly understand the feeling of other people, and thus fail to understand the deeper background of many events in this world.

Besides, with respect to the studies of ancient history, which seems valueless for us even to understand this world, these studies still bear their indispensable value, for they can help us better know what human beings are. Unlike natural sciences, scholars of social studies and humanities cannot carry out experiments to test the nature of human beings. They have to appeal to the study of history, appealing to tons of events having happened before, to get data about human nature. Through studying the fall of Roman Empire, they can find the human tendency to be dissipated after success; through the study of French Revolution, they would realize the power of human thirst for equality; through researching the rein of Hitler, they could know that passion can supercedes reason even in a nation which has a long tradition of cool philosophy: all these studies can reveal human nature which cannot be shown in other manners; and all these studies can offer lesson that people can learn from and avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Moreover, the study of history also has the value of meeting human desire for inquiring. Contra animals, human beings do not only care about their well being, but also concerns about the mysteries of the world. Just like natural scientists devote themselves into discovering the heaven bodies millions of millions of miles away, historians have the passion to seek the knowledge of what had happened in human childhood. Even if their finding has nothing to do with the society we live in, yet it is out of human nature to know about the past. Nothing can replace this role of history study.

In the final analysis, the value of history study beyond daily lives is also precious for human beings. It helps people better understand not only the present, but also the nature of themselves, and still satisfy human eagerness of knowledge. It is too hasty--and superficial--to judge the value of history studies only by daily concerns.
