Argument200: 421 words   30 minutes
Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

The arguer in this argument recommends that dentists should advertise to attract male patients and pay more attention to the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients. To justify the recommendation, the arguer cited statistics collected from dentists which reveals that men faint are three times more than women while visiting the dentist. Close scrutiny of the argument reveals it lend little support to the recommendation.

To begin with, a threshold problem with the argument involve with whether the figures cited in this argument is statistically reliable. The arguer provide no information about how the statistics are collected, moreover, the arguer do not offer sufficient evidence that the statistics are representative and the results are randomness outcome of a scientific survey. Therefore, the statistics are not founded.

Secondly, even assuming that the statistics collected from dentists are reliable, the mere fact that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist is insufficient evidence to conclude that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Perhaps, there are many symptoms that are severe than faint in women than men when they visiting the dentist, but the arguer does not mention them. The scenario, if true, would serve to undermine the claim made by the arguer that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are.

Thirdly, the argument is based on a gratuitous assumption that the advertisement aiming at to attract patients will put to effect. It is possible that the population of men in the country where the statistics were collected are very little due to many complex factors, therefore, the advertisement would do little to attract men patients. Besides, the arguer made another gratuitous assumption that there is an causal relationship between the effectiveness of the anesthetic techniques, the sensitivity of the staff to nervous or suffering patients and the faint of the men and women. Perhaps the environment in the dentist's clinic result in the faint in men and women, but women are more adaptable to the environment than men. Therefore, the claims the arguer have made is presumptuous.

To sum up, the argument lacks credibility since the evidence cited in the argument does not lend strong support to what the arguer claims. To make the argument more convincing, the arguer should provide information concerning whether the statistics collected are representative and reliable. To better evaluate the argument, we also need to know concrete evidence about whether faint is the only symptom while visiting a dentist, whether the advertise will take effect and whether there is a causal relationship between the effectiveness and sensitivity of the dentist and the faint. Otherwise, the argument is logically unaccepted.
