In the era when my parents were young,most of the informations and knowledges they learned were from books,as television and other kind of media were not so popular as today.In this age of televison ,is reading books not as important as it once was?Can people learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books?Any rough assertion on this complicated issue will be improper.However,as far as I'm concerned,reading books is not so important as before,but people still can't learn as much from television as they can from books.


Admittedly,as the televison and kinds of other media develops,reading books do not play such a vital role as before.Today on the TV,We can learn how to stop the pain when bitten by a bee from the Discovery Channel,housewives can obtain the recipe of Chinese food from a food-cooking programme and politics fans can learn what's going in the north Korea from an conversation analysising the situation there.We can aquire many informations and knowledges from the television everyday and this is a more direct way which makes the learning more easy and effective,compared to learning from books.Part of the position of books has been taken by the TV.



Although people's attentions on television make the books not so important as before nowadays, television still can not take the place of books.First of all,the contents the television programmes involve are such a tiny part,compared to the ocean of knowledges included in books.For thousands of years,books are the most common way to record.Productions and fruits of people's inteligence in such a long period are all stored in the world of books.You hava little chance to learn from the television programmes how to produce a real aeroplane step by step,the details of the history of Troy and how to write a C++ programme to solve your industrial problem.But you can obtain all those knowledges in books ,although it will take you some time to search for them in library.


On the other hand,the contents of the television programmes are controled by the television stations,although the users can make their choise among various channels.It's possible that one day you are watching a programme about how to plant flowers,and right in the middle of the planting process it is cut off by a soap opera.You must feel angry and wish to continue the planting learning,but all you have got in hand is just the remote,not the control of the programme-playing.It is better for you to aquire a book about flower planting instead of waiting for the next part of that programme after a week.In addition,sometimes you want to watch something really serious and learn something useful,while all channels are playing entertainment programs.You still have to turn to the books,which can go well with your timing and mood.


As we discussed above,at this time of television,books don't play a role as important as before.Nonetheless,television still can’t take the place of books.Because its content are far limited comparing to books,and we can't feel free to use the television for learning as it's controled by the program-providers.We people living in the cage of television need to fly in the sky of books.
