TOPIC:ARGUMENT 169 - The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.

"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

In this argument, the speaker tries to convince us that the Picerce University (PU) can make its faculties live more comfortable and attract new professors by offering their spouses job opportunities. Although it seems reasonable at the first glance, a careful scrutiny reveals that the reasoning suffers from several critical flaws.

To begin with, the credibility of the studies taken by Bronston College (BC) is open to doubt. Firstly, the speaker fails to mention how many professors are involved in studies. If the total number is too small to represent the whole population at BC, any conclusion generated from these studies should not be taken seriously. Secondly, the speaker assumes that there is a causal relationship between working in the same region and living happily for spouses. Perhaps other explanation might account for this. For example, these professors at BC lives happily for the reason of college's reputation, good environment, moderate climate, low crime rate, etc. Unless these possibilities are rules out, the speaker's assumption is unacceptable.

Moreover, given that the studies themselves and assertions from them at BC were reliable, it does not follow that it will be the same case at PU. The speaker unfairly neglected the differences between the two colleges. For instance, the BC offers its faculties a high salary than PU, thus professors at BC can enjoy a happy life. If the PU do not provide similar thing, its faculties would less likely live happily even if their spouses work in the same region.

In addition, even granted that PU can attract new professors their, they might not be the most gifted ones. It is possible that great scholars mainly care about the reputation and research atmosphere when they choosing university to serve. If the PU's condition cannot meet their expectations, they would surly not come.

Last but not least, the money spent on offering spouses employment might not as well as the speaker addressed. Firstly, although PU offers jobs for their spouses, it does not imply that they will take these opportunities. Secondly, even though these offers really appeal to the spouses, new professors might not choose to serve PU. It is quite possible that there are other universities located in the same region where PU is based. While new professors’ spouses take jobs offered by PU, they may teach at other nearby universities.

In sum, the argument is unpersuasive according to the flaws mentioned above.

这篇本来想得很清楚的,怎么写着写着就乱了?
[乱在第一段和最后的部分。这么展开是不是更清楚一点儿
1:.置疑study
2.置疑causal relationship
3,false analogy
a城市风格,魅力程度,工作难易(比如该城可能非常好找工作,所以学校解决不解决无所谓);
