TOPIC:ISSUE 4 - "No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study."
WORDS:422 TIME:AM 12:45:00 DATE:31/8/2005
The speaker believes that only if[when] outsiders bring in their new knowledge and experience can any field of study be significantly advanced. In my point of view, I concede that in the era of modern science when interdisciplinary researches loom large, outsiders can benefit the field a lot. However, [自己的要表达的Ts最好统合成一句,IN my point of view, although,..;yet…]from a broader perspective, outsiders are unnecessary, and even impossible under extreme circumstances for the sake of great breakthroughs in researches.
Admittedly, owing to outsiders' knowledge, techniques [and前加逗号。 and perspective, many disciplines have been greatly promoted recently. Take the paleoanthropology for instance. Long gone are the days when paleoanthropologists collect information from human fossils merely by measuring their differences in physical dimensions. After the combination of paleoanthropology and molecular biology, a branch called molecular paleoanthropology is created. With the help of modern genetic techniques, paleoanthropologists formed a new theory on[the?] origin of human race -- the "Eve theory" -- addressing that all human beings at present can be traced back to a common black mother in Africa millions of years ago. As the example illustrates, such a significant advancement in paleoanthropology would be impossible in the absence of molecular biology. Thus it is reasonable to assert that outsiders have the potential to bring about a big leap in the researches of certain fields.[这一段的内容还可以加上一下现代学术分科的一些弊端,搞考古的对分子技术一无所知,而outsiders正可以弥补这一点,比如你的例子。]
However, in some cases,[ 加一句突出主题:然而,speaker过于夸大了outsders的作用。 outsider does not serve as an indispensable factor for the advancement of study. History is abundant of examples. For instance, centuries ago, Galileo made one of the greatest discoveries in physics -- the law of free fall -- by experiments. During his experiments, there was no outsider but Galileo himself. That is to say, without outsiders, scholars from certain fields can advance their studies by endeavor of themselves alone.[仅仅把例子举出来了,但没有分析原因。
In addition, in some extreme cases, it is[not only of no necessity but also 加强和上一段的逻辑联系] impossible for outsiders to promote studies of certain fields with their knowledge and experience. Take the mathematics for example. Although science and engineering always borrow theories such as linear control, nonlinear control and chaos control from mathematics to improve themselves, mathematics has no discipline to refer to. The mathematical research is so pure and fundamental that almost no other disciplines can give it a hand. While this example might be extreme, it properly proves that the circumstance under which outsiders have nothing to offer truly exists.[还是那样,不要只列出例子。 。]
In sum, it is true that many fields of study have been benefited[好像不用被动也可以] from outsiders’ contribution,[分号。记住要适量的使用分号!] nonetheless, it is also the case [ though rare/ 可以省it is么?不确定] that outsiders are not indispensable for significant advancement in [some]researches. Moreover,[改成破折号――on the contrary,…变成一句] they even have nothing to contribute under extreme circumstances.
