Issue144
"It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value."
Different from the assertion of the issue above, in my opinion, the artists and the critics , acctually, give our society many things of lasting value together in an interactional way.
Primarily, according to what Frued, a well-knomn expert of psychiatry:L, said art, in essence, is a kind of discharge of individual lust, converting the human libido into plentiful creativity. Through this work, artists express their passions, emotions, and desires. From this we can see that art is therefore, first and foremost, concerning with the inner world rather than with the outside one as a whole. In this case, more than objective and popular, art is appeared subjective and independent and it seems the very reason why the art usually can seldom be understood by others--even in it, something of lasting value are contained. For instance, the famouse work of Monet called "Impression: Sunrise" was not understood initially, since it seems peculiar for a large amount of blue was used as the major color for sunlight.
However, earning their reputation at last like Monet, whose "peculiar" work "Impression: Sunrise" led to the name for impressionism, many works ignored by people at that time are well-known to all nowadays. Take Emily Bronte's book as an example, the great English writer wrote only one novel in her life, the highly acclaimed "Wuthering Heights", initially criticized for its violent nature, but forty years later, the book become a member of English literary classics' world. Did signs and wonders have taken place? Obviously not, their coming to front might mostly owe to the critics, who evaluate works of art, and then bring those valuable but ununderstood works to more and more people. At present in China, critics of the novel "Dream of the Red Mansion"(one of the Four Famous Chinese Classics finished in Qing period, around the year 1792) still argue over the exact historical facts of what the book described. It undoubtedly can make the novel keep enduring, come down generation by generation.
Therefore, attributing the things of lasting values in our society only to either artists or critics is too simplified and opinionated. The handing down of valuable art not only depends on the originality of long standing of the artist, but also the critics, who bring us to the art, and finally let those art develop with us. <385 words> |
