Should all nations help support the development of a global university designed engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems, as the speaker asserts? In my point of view, I disagree, to some extent, with the speaker. It is unnecessary to develop such a special-purposed university, while introducing some courses in other universities concerning these social problems may be a better choice.

The first reason that the development of a global university designed engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems is unnecessary is that the ultimate purpose of education is to instill knowledge to the students. On the one hand, the students engaging into the college or university is to acquire various knowledge, such as science, history, business, art, etc, based on their different interests. to solve the social problems is not the goal of the university, and they have no responsibility to accomplish such a task. On the other hand, merely by the education of university could the problems hardly be solved, because the government and the society have more priority in addressing such circumstance than the students.

The second argument that it is no necessity to establish such a university is that the appearance and severity of the most persistent social problems are different in different countries, although there are several social problems in all nations. In different countries, the definition of the world's most persistent social problems is different. Perhaps theft in richer countries will only be regarded as a bad habit, while as severe guilty in poorer ones. Violence, for instance, may be common phenomenon in an unstable nation where other social problems are more seriously, while is horrible in people' eyes of a prosperous country. Consequently, it is difficult to establish a uniform standard to develop such a university according what contents should be taught in priority as to solve the most persistent problems.

However, not to develop a special university dose not mean having no necessity to educate students engaging in solving such social problems. It is quite possible and, in some sense, essential, for all nations to set up curricula in such areas as social ethics to improve the awareness of students toward social problems.

To sum up, involving some relevant courses in general universities rather than developing a new university merely in order to solve the world's most persistent social problems might be a better solution to this issue.
