TOPIC:ARGUMENT 72 - In measuring electrical activity in different parts of the brain, researchers found that people who describe themselves as generally happy have more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of their brains than do other people. Therefore, a medication for stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective treatment for clinical depression.

In this argument, the arguer concludes that a medication for stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective treatment for clinical depression, because researchers found that people who describe themselves as generally happy have more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of their brains than do other people from a measurement. This argument sounds plausible at the first glance, but it actually suffers from several critical fallacies.

First of all, the fact that people who describe themselves as generally happy dose not necessarily mean these people are really happier than other people. On the one hand, the standard of happy is different for different people. Under the same conditions, some people would feel happy while others not. Consequently, it is difficult to say whether one is happy or not merely on the basis of what they said. On the other hand, without the size of the research's sample and what fraction of the respondents are in the total number, whether the respondents are representative for the whole population is unknown, so the arguer cannot confidently apply the result of this measurement to the overall group of people.

Secondly, the arguer observes a correlation between happy and more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of brains, then draws a conclusion that the latter is the cause of the former. Yet this conclusion is unfounded. Perhaps people who are happy because they are richer. The living problems, such as the house, the car, the work and so on, are well solved, thus they have less pressure and are happier. Without ruling out other factors as mentioned above, the arguer cannot convince me that more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of the brains is responsible for the happy.

Finally, granted that stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective way to make people happier, but this dose not mean the clinical depression will be solved effectively because the arguer provides no evidence that being unhappy is the most problems the patients meet and can not be cured effectively. There are a variety of other reasons might cause the clinical depression. Perhaps the patients dissatisfy with the service there; or perhaps the medical technology cannot meet the patients’ need, there are lots of diseases cannot effectively treated in the clinics. Without taking into account all such other possibilities, whether the arguer’s recommendation will be effective is open to doubt.

In conclusion, the arguer fails to establish a causal relationship between a medication for stimulation the left prefrontal lobe of the brain and solving the problem of clinical depression. To strengthen the argument, the arguer would have to provide evidence that more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of the brains can cause happy. To better evaluate the argument, we would need more information concerning the cause of clinical depression.

First of all, the fact that people who describe themselves as generally happy dose not necessarily mean (that)these people are really happier than other people. On the one hand, the standard of happy (应该是快乐的评判标准吧)is different for different people. (even)Under the same conditions, some people would feel happy while others not. Consequently, it is difficult to say whether one is happy or not merely on the basis of what they said. On the other hand, without (giving)the size of the research's sample and what fraction of the respondents are in the total number, whether the respondents are representative for the whole population is unknown, so the arguer cannot(should not会不会更好?) confidently apply the result of this measurement to the overall group of people.

Secondly, the arguer observes a correlation between happy and more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of brains, then draws a conclusion(用make an assertion吧) that the latter is the cause of the former. Yet this conclusion is unfounded. Perhaps people who are happy because they are richer. (,or)The living problems, such as the house, the car, the work and so on, are well solved, thus(前面有because了) they have less pressure and are happier. Without ruling out other factors as mentioned above, the arguer cannot convince me that more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of the brains is responsible for the happy.

Finally, granted that stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective way to make people happier, but this dose not mean(does not mean 是不是可以换一种表达,前面用过了) the clinical depression will be solved effectively because the arguer provides no evidence that being unhappy is the most problems the patients meet and can not be cured effectively(改成“不高兴是抑郁症的诱因”更合适). (since that)There are a variety of other reasons might cause the clinical depression. Perhaps the patients dissatisfy with the service there; or(去掉) perhaps(maybe) the medical technology cannot meet the patients’ need,(or) there are lots of diseases cannot effectively treated in the clinics. Without taking into account all such other possibilities, whether the arguer’s recommendation will be effective is open to doubt(可以改用Unless句型).

逻辑满连贯的但感觉阐述得不够丰富,可能是由于句式比较单一的原因,加油哦!!
