Issue36:(529)
The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
Ontline:
1、由于时代的局限性个人的伟大不能得到公正的评判(毛泽东)
2、由于同时代的人看到的只是当时社会的一小部分,评判不全面(只缘身在此山中)
3、由于某些个人思想的超前性,往往不能让同时代人接受(Vogh)
正文:
Who can decide whether a man is greatness or not? Their contemporaries or their later generations? As far as I concern, for the limitation of the times and individuals, most great people are decided by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
Due to the limitation of the times, the greatness of individuals cannot be decided by their contemporaries fairly. Admittedly, most people's minds, such as world view, value view. etc, are effected heavily by their surroundings and circumstances. And because of some dominant social ideology, conventions and beliefs, people's perspective are always relatively narrow and limit compared with that of next generations. For example, Mao Zhedong, one of the most famous chairmen in China, was considered as a sage, the most wise man without any fault, by his contemporaries in the contemporary era. But after decades of years, later generations give a more objective judge: though Chairman Mao had done great contributions to China, he had made several mistakes in decision-making. It shows later generations have a more justify judgment in decisions.
In addition, the later generations judge the things more comprehensive. It is easily understandable given the illustration of mountain climbing. When one climbs the mountain, he/she can appreciate the views around him/her. However, it is hard for him to have an all-sided impression. Only if he/she stands on the top of the mountain, he/she can take in every scene in a glance. Contemporaries like the viewers on the middle of the mountain, they can see part of the society, but without a whole realization, while later generations like the people on the top of the mountain, they can see the whole society and give fair decisions to historical individuals about whether they are greatness.
Also, some individuals cannot be decided justify by their contemporaries by the reason that they are avant-garde whose point of view are often obscure and hard to understand. Take Von Gogh as an example. He was a typical avant-garde that his works do not accepted by his contemporaries that he lives a poor life and regarded as madness. Nobody could understand what the things appearing in his painting means. However, nowadays, his works are invaluable and he is considered as one of the most famous masters in impressionism paintings. That is to say, maybe the great individuals are not accepted by their contemporaries for the limitation of knowledge and so on, later generations would better decide the greatness of individuals.
Yet I do not mean that only later generations can decide the greatness of individuals, some lucky individuals can be found their greatness by their contemporaries. Such as Mother Teresa, who contributed greatly to the medication and nursing of the developing countries, was award the Nobel Prize of Peace by people who live in a same time with her.
In sum, the greatness of individuals are mostly decided by those who live after them for the broad and comprehension of later generation's mind, non-limitation of individuals' time. Admittedly, I do not exclude the possibility that some lucky individuals are decided as great men by their contemporaries. However, the number is limited. |
