I do not agree with the speaker's opinion, in other words, I think not only people who live after individuals but also their contemporaries can decide the greatness of them. I will support my opinion by analyzing the cases of several typical fields as below.

From science and study field, we can find that although many theories or inventions have to be proved and examined for a long time, there are still many results that are recognized by people immediately, and then the greatness of the owners are accepted by their contemporaries at once. On the one hand, some theories are relatively easy to be comprehended, especially those that can be proved directly by experiments. For example, Galileo substantiated that heavy object falls at the same speed with light object by throwing two balls of different weights from the famed Leaning Tower of Pisa at the same time. Thus his greatness was soon recognized by the contemporary people. On the other hand, many theories are very hard to be understood and also have difficulties to visualize them in experiments or to substantiate, so it is completely possible that the presenters’ greatness is found by the descendants when their theories can be proved to be truth.

From art field, there are many examples that the greatness of individuals is found by the descendants, and examples that individuals are canonized by their contemporaries are also countless. Take Shakespeare as an example of the former. His poems and dramas were liked widely and he was considered as one of the greatest dramatists by people in his era. On the contrary, Van Gogh was not so lucky. His paintings were very abstract and until many years later, people began to appreciate his works gradually. However, there are also some artists whose greatness was decided by the descendants not because their works were elusive or obscure, but because they conflicted with the potentate. For example, the famous writer Mark Twain reflected the darkness and corruption of the government in his novels using humorous styles, then he was retaliated by the potentate and his novels were even forbidden to sell, which resulted that his greatness was recognized by those who lived after him several years later.

When refer to the political field, as particularity of politics, it is hard to judge whether a person is a great one. It is possible that one is the hero to some people’s opinion, but the enemy to other people. Napoleon is a typical example. He conquered almost the whole world, but brought great disasters to lots of people. It is also likely that the contemporaries’ evaluations of individuals are too unilateral, extreme or eyeless, and lack of justness. For example, the Chairman Mao of China was thought as the greatest person and even the divinity by people of that era, but now people are saner and know that actually he also had many faults during his tenure. Consequently, although the contemporaries can also evaluate politicians, the descendants have many advantages since they can value them from more wide and sane view.

To sum up, either the contemporaries or the descendants can decide the greatness of individuals. Those cases that individuals’ contemporaries decide their greatness probably result from the limitation of knowledge, thinking, temporal political situation, and the like.
