In the modern world, television as a powerful household appliance is so common and familiar to people all over the world. The issuer claimed that reading books is not as important as it once was and people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. However, I hold the opposite opinions that though people could attain much knowledge by watching TV, reading books is as important as it was, and people cannot learn by watching TV as much as they can by reading books.

As a threshold matter, it is undeniable that in the age of television, to learn by watching TV has lots of advantages in education. By watching TV, people are exposed to the vivid and instructive pictures accompanied with sweet sound explaining particularly, which is helpful for understanding. The famous academic program Discovery, for instance, is the typical TV program that elaborates the special and magic worlds that hardly reached to the audiences, such as the out space, the kingdom of insects, the submarine realm and so on. Admittedly, TV grogram provides more understandable and impressive instructions than books do. Meanwhile, it is limited in the use of a TV set and the content of the TV program, which is not so convenience as books.

However, while the goodness of TV is listed above, the advantages of reading books in education should not be ignored, either. As the main media to record, conserve and convey information, books have the advantages of convenience, credibility and multi-choice. First, the books are relative small and light so that they are portable and reading books is less confined by the time and space. Second, most book published are more carefully censored than TV programs, thus the details and data in books are more credible. Third, the sorts of books are usually more than TV programs, which provides multiple choice than TV program. Compared with the TV program, reading book is superior than watching TV in some aspects which make it as important as before.

Further more, people cannot learn by watching TV as much as they can by reading books, for the reason as following. First, the books provide almost every information required while TV program not. As some knowledge contained in books is unsuitable to be show in TV programs, or considering the cost and popularity of the program, many information is only record in books. Second, most TV programs are of entertainment sorts, not of educational sorts. It is as a matter of fact that entertainment will attract more audience than education programs, ascribing to that the audience rating usually corresponds to income of program makers. As a result, that books contain more information than TV programs contributes to the fact that people learn more by reading books than by watching TV.

In a word, according to what had been recounted above, a conclusion could be draw safely that books offer the more accurate information in larger amount than TV, while TV offer more vivid and understandable knowledge, both of them have the their own superiority to meet different needs in acquiring of knowledge, thus in order to obtain entire and impressive knowledge, people should complement one with another when studying.
