In a world with developing technologies, with the distinct customs and ethics from old generations’, some say that social customs and ethics are not only influenced but also determined by them, while, I partially agree with this claim. I believe that technologies do exert influence on social customs and ethics, but they are not the main determinant, in contrary, they are somewhat directed and influenced by customs and ethics

As a threshold matter, it is undoubted that technologies influence social customs in almost every aspect, while ethics tend to be strengthened. Such is the fact that our world is ever changing by the ever-growing technologies and thus some of our beliefs, ideas and value correspond with the change. Therefore, the social customs are inevitable different from what we held as before. For example, we no longer pray the god for good harvest but try to improve the technology of agriculture and increase productivity. While, the basic ethics, such as the respect of life, is strengthened by the technologies, for the progressing of recognition of ourselves and enlightened value. We are more cautious, for instance, to deprive individual’s life than we were in Feudalistic time. Thus, technologies have some affect on social customs and ethics.

However, technologies do not play the dominative role to determine social customs and ethics. Though, we have high technologies of convenient communication, the customs of reunion of family when Christmas and Mid-moon Day in China has never been disregarded or forgotten. As well as the basic ethics of society, such as the respect of life, is never changed. Since social customs and ethics are more likely to be determined by our cultures, which are handed down from generations, and human natures, high technologies hardly change and determine such inrooted convention, especially when contradict with such human principle. Therefore, technologies are not determinants of social customs and ethics.

In contrary, social customs and ethics exert influence on technologies and even restrict the advancement of them. For one hand, technologies are advanced on the base of the demand of human, such as convenience and quickness, contributing to the fact that our customs are well varied and enriched by technologies. The beautiful firework, for instance, enhances the atmosphere of happy when celebration of New year. For the other hand, social ethics could restrict the development of technologies, especially when they are advancing to the adverse side with human nature. For example, the clone of human is the controversy of high technology with human ethics of the respect of life and is confined by ethics. In the way, social customs and ethics not only influence but also determine technologies.

To sum up, according what had been discussed, a conclusion could be drawn safely that technologies influence social customs and ethics, for the change of ideas, beliefs and value of human and progressing recognition, but they are not the determinant of customs and ethics. Whereas, social customs and ethics not only influence but also actually determine technologies, ascribing to the self-evidence that technologies are designed to serve and practice human demand.
