TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition andmodernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
I concede that tradition and modernizationare not of the same concept, and in some cases, they are contradictory to eachother, as the speaker asserts. In my view, the speaker, nevertheless, unnecessarily extends its assertion to embrace the all possible alternatives, including the development of society, technology and science, and theindividual life in contemporary times.
I agree with the speaker insofar as in the endeavorof technology modernizations are taking the place of the traditionaltechnology. With the development of technology, there are an increasing numberof innovations which are playing extremely important roles in our daily life, such as automobile, mobile telephone, and television. Consider, for example, automobile, which has changed our life and society marvelously. In thatautomobiles are able to save human a multitude of time from a place to anotherone, they have been a part-and-parcel of our life. And, no one is missing thetimes of riding horse as a traffic tool.(说得有点绝对了)
On the other hand, we have to face thecontemporary times in our world. Human are making huge efforts to producefar-reaching influences in the modern world with the knowledge of tradition.
First of all, the accumulated knowledges inscience are of great importance in the process of modernization. For instance, the classic mechanics which was founded by Newton is the basis of many profounddisciplines, which is the reason why the middle schools are still teaching theclassic mechanics nowadays, while the students from these schools will beworking for the modernization. Thus, the traditional accumulations are necessaryfor the present world and the development of the modernization.
Secondly, tradition and modernization, atleast, are able to be compatible on the level of individuals. This point ofcontention with the speaker is universal in modern society and there are lotsof striking examples for it. Every one nowadays is living in a modernizedworld, while we all have some habits or traits for the tradition. When we arelistening to the ipod player which is a sort of players popular in young peers,we can also read certain great book in traditional literature. And, we placegreat emphasis on the traditional festivals with the members of our familysince we were born. While we are dressed in a piece of traditional clothes, wecan attend a pop music concert. All of the phenomenon above are the evidencefor the compatibility of tradition and modernization.
Thirdly, the history treasures of traditionare the majority of resource in our society in that the tradition which hasbeen accumulated since the origin of human society. Thus, the excellent objectsin former time should not be ruined or forgotten in our time. Consider theremained structures for example. The structures built in ancient time can notonly tell us the culture in that period of history but they can provide theimplication about trend in structures from which we can know a great deal abouthow to develop our nowadays structures and help us improve the pace ofdevelopment of buildings.
To sum up, I concedethat the traditional idea differs from the one of modernization and thecompatibility exists under some circumstances. However, in more aspects in thepresent times they can both play important roles in our life harmoniously, inthat, we cannot only choose one of them.
