38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
The statement above asserts that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books because reading books is not as important as it once was. It is true that people can learn a lot from the programs displayed in television in some aspects, however, I strongly disagree with the conclusion that the importance of reading books is decreased. Moreover, watching television cannot take the place of reading books for several reasons.
Although it is the age of television now, reading books is still as significant as it once was and it grows even more crucial under some circumstances. It is ostensibly that reading books is more superior in learning, especially when it comes to learning the philosophical ideas. People need to think deeply before they could understand such ideas and it is a good way to think while reading books which provide us the exact words the philosophers want to tell us, yet television cannot work as well as books. For instance, it is necessary to understand Confucius’ idea by reading his words in his books other than watching television which cannot show us the exact meaning Confucius would like to inform us.
What is more, even if the significance of reading books is declining, watching television cannot replace reading books. The speaker overlooks the fact that books have many advantages which we cannot find in televisions. For one respect, it is very convenient to take books with us but it is actually impossible to take a television by our side. For another respect, television cannot work in the place without electricity, however we could read books everywhere. Moreover, we can read a book once again in any time when we like, but television programs are not under our control. Given such scenarios, television is not a substitute for books.
Admittedly, many television programs supply us plenty of knowledge, and we can actually learn a lot by watching television. Moreover, Television holds certain advantages over reading books, it can provide us video and sound which we cannot acquire from reading books. We may get to know how a bird chirp like and how a lion roars like by listening to television, in addition, we can enjoy the beautiful view of a place of interest by observing the pictures in television. As a matter of fact, such kind of programs is often very popular, Discovery is a good example. Yet, such kind of enjoyments cannot be found by reading books.
In sum, although television provides us an efficient and effective way of learning a great number of knowledge which we cannot receive from reading books, we may not consider it as a replacement of reading books since books are inherently superior to television in many aspects. Besides, reading books is now as important as or even more crucial than it was in learning.
