TOPIC: ISSUE47 - "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."

WORDS: 442          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2008-3-29 23:19:01

Thinking logically is an important skill for our humankind. With logic and other scientific tools we can make an objective understanding of our world and our universe and we can also use these tools to reconstruct the physical world around us. But, society in which we live and communicate with other people does not require our logical thinking very much. So, social science and natural science are two completely different fields in our knowledge system. The statement above tells us a truth, but I think it is an inevitable characteristic of our society because the ways to resolve those terms which require logical thingking are invented by us through a very particular process.
There is no doubt that the most important event for our logical thinking is the appearance of logic. And this great achievement is due to Aristotle. In his logic, he told us how to think logically and how to resolve abstract problems. Many greatest scientific findings are made by an individual. Newton found his gravity theory through an accident in which an apple fell on his smart head and enlighted him. Einstein gave us a better gravity theory through his own thinking. These intelletual achievements do not derive from our society. Normal society in which these great men lives did not provide reasoning and other cognitive skills to them. Only a small society like public schools and colleges can satisfy their knowledge lust. Even more, some of those scientists learned by themselves from books to become a great one. So, for these great findings, the statement is true.
For normal individuals in the world, societies also do not place enough empasis on logical thinking. We can only do cognitive works through some certain activities like chess or other games which are develope by ourselves to improve our reasoning and cognitive skills. Students spend much time in their schools learning those logical issues but they can only use only a few parts of them in their everyday life. Average people do not like to talk those logical issues in a free talk. And the majority even hate these issues, though most achievements of our humankind are made through them. For normal persons, thinking logically is the privilege of those well-educated people. It is said by many people that mathematics, which is the synonym of logical thinking, can only do a little bit effective function in one's life. Given that most people do not like thinking logically, the society can not provide enough cognitive skills to us.
The abstract scientific achievements made by those great people may do not interfere much with our everyday life. The statement tells us a truth.

Thinking logically is an important skill for our humankind. With logics and other scientific tools we can make an objective understanding of our world and our universe and we can also use these tools to reconstruct the physical world around us. But, society in which we live and communicate with other people does not require our logical thinking very much. So, social science and natural science are two completely different fields in our knowledge system. The statement above tells us a truth, but I think it is an inevitable characteristic of our society because the ways to resolve those terms which require logical thinking are invented by us through a very particular process.

There is no doubt that the most important event for our logical thinking is the appearance of logics. And this great achievement is due to Aristotle. In his logics, he told us how to think logically and how to resolve abstract problems. Many greatest scientific findings are made by an individual. Newton found his gravity theory through an accident in which an apple fell on his smart head and delighted him. Einstein gave us a better gravity theory through his own thinking. These intellectual achievements do not derive from our society. Normal society in which these great men live did not provide reasoning and other cognitive skills to them. Only a small society like public schools and colleges can satisfy their knowledge lust. Even more, some of those scientists learn by him from books to become a great one. So, for these great findings, the statement is true.

For normal individuals in the world. Societies also do place enough emphasis on logical thinking. We can only do cognitive works through some certain activities like chess or other games which are developed by ourselves to improve our reasoning and cognitive skills. Students spend much time in their schools learning those logical issues but they can only use only a few parts of them in their everyday life. Average people do not like to talk those logical issues in a free talk. And the majority even hates these issues, though the most achievements of our humankind are made through them.
