"The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records".

Different people have different point of views through the issue of whether or not records produced by video camera are more important than written records. Some people, like the speaker concludes that the video recording is a more important form of documenting contemporary life than a written record because video recordings are more accurate and convincing. Some others may maintain that written records will never be replaced by video image records. On balance, from my point of views, I believe that the final judgment should make through a case-by-case study that both of these two methods has their reasons to exist and will be better developing through combining together.

First of all, for the temporal documenting of spatial events and experience, it is true that video records are usually more accurate and more convincing than written records. Common sense tells us that no matter how skilled and acute a journalist, it is impossible for him or her to fully recount the scenes such as the game ball at the final play of table tennis, a wonderful dance drama or the foundation ceremony of the People’s Republic of China at Beijing on October 1st, 1949. Yet, these are important events for not only relative individuals but also whole society. In these cases, video recordings are showing to us the exactly truth surpass a simple written record.

Secondly, not only record the important events as mentioned above, video documents also play as a fair-minded judgment in many fields. For example, the final judgment of one hundred meters run at worldwide track meeting already used the video camera as the determinant for decades. And this is the same to all other kinds of competition regarding to speed. Moreover, when controversial fouls happened in such as football and basketball games, video camera played a crucial role in determining how to judge. These records, of course, is better described with video images rather than only written records.

However, for certain other purposes, written records are advantageous to and more impressive than video records. On the one hand, video camera could not be available everywhere to record everything. At this time, newspapers, history books, novels and even poems, all kept the information of contemporary society from different points of views and through various types of measures. On the other hand, video camera, although kept objective, accurate and complete history moments, could not replace the charming function in written records. With the writer’s personal analysis and comprehend on the events its self, the written materials give the reader more imagination while reading. Each reader might have his or her own imagination of characters which not coincide with those in films video. It is well known that many famous fictions give more impression than video films or televisions to readers, such as Gone with the wind, Prejudice and Proud and The adventures of Robison Crusoe. All these kinds of written measures make us thinking of world from all dimensions.

To sum up, what the speaker claim is underestimate the importance of the written records and overestimate the video records. So balance these two parts, the means of recording should depend on the situation what the matters we want to record.
