TOPIC: ISSUE82 - "Government should never censor the artistic works or historical displays that a museum wishes to exhibit."
WORDS: 561
提纲:
Seldom can an exhibition of art be held without examining and approving by certain group of artists and officers. This examination is a safety belt to ensure that the exhibition avails to most visitors, which we usually call it a "control". The government censors the artistic works or historical displays such as sculpture, literature, drawing, ancient pottery and so on, Which, is seemed viable and necessary.
Art productions are treasures inheriting from our forebear. A transcendent sculpture or painting can express complex meanings in it, and strike a responsive chord in the hearts of its readers. It also presents us with insight into what is eternal and universal. By appreciating "Madonna of the Yarnwinder", one of the greatest works of da Vinci, for instance, spectators may feel the emotion of author in his composing time. The vivid colors and expressive brush strokes of that painting illustrates mixed feelings such as love, sympathy, enthusiasm, and philanthropism to the visitors. Consequently, showing these cultural heritages to public can stimulate citizen's motivation and excite their inspiration to acquaint the entire world roundly and insightfully.
Unfortunately, not all of artistic works are filled with positive or optimistic attitude towards lives. Some artists are famous with their twisted emotion, tragic childhood or bumpy career life; they might hate the government, certain kind of people, or even the entire human beings at that time. As art productions illustrate the private feelings of authors, some significations of literature, drawing, painting or drama are even harmful for individuals, particularly the children between infancy and adolescence in building correct conscience and world view. A historical display -- Mein Kampf, written by Hitler, is considered a highly controversial book due to its racist content. This, may spread the racial discrimination to some people.
So, government is needed to control the exhibition. It censors the exhibits and bans the works may cause unhealthy conscience establishing or social cataclysm. For instance, some art works with sexual or violent substance, should be forbidden exhibiting to the young. This control, is used to filter the negative and pessimistic art works, and then guarantee a harmonious and well-developed social environment.
However, government supervising of the arts must always be politicized and bureaucratized. One of the curious contradictions of those who monitor the exhibition is that they also demand absolutely control of the exhibits. In other words, all the supervisors serve the interests of the political group in control and also to deal with things that threaten the very survival of the regime. Martin Luther King were rejected to publish his book by the US government until 1961, a year before his famous speech -- "I have a dream". Photographer Sherry Levine was refused to exhibit her early images until she was 55, for the expression of the oppression of the female gender by American advertising, law, and social custom in her productions. Hence some of the artists and exhibition organizer consider the control of government as a spiritual oppression.
No matter how the supervisors urge the artists or exhibition organizer, since we are living in a society supported by a tremendous machine called "Country", the only thing for us to do is to maintain public order and build correct world view with conscience and common sense. And for the exhibition may potentially influences our thinking, in my opinion, the control of government is necessary and viable. |
