14. The following appeared in a memo from the owner ofGreen Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.

"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine GreatGardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

Merely based on groundless assumptions and dubious analysis, the speaker assert that their profits will increase in the coming spring by expanding the variety of vegetables seeds for the consumers. To substantiate his assertion, the speaker cite the result of a survey conduct last month which show that many consumers are dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetable in the market, as well as the fact that a gardening magazine is welcomed in the last three month. Finally, it is unconvincing to cite the fact that the gardening magazine GreatGardens has sold out in last three months in a row. First, it is possible that the circulation of the magazine is very small, so that there are still little people reading this magazine even if it is sold out. Furthermore, it is a gardening magazine instead of a magazine teaches people how to cultivate vegetables. Maybe the readers of it are just interested in the part of flowers or something else other than the vegetables. Hence the popularity of GreatGarden doesn’t indicate the coming popularity of vegetable growing.

In summery, due to lack of crucial evidences and details, it is unreasonable to expand the stock of the seeds to get a profit in the coming spring. What we need is a much more careful and comprehensive study of the market before making any decision.
