Issue48 “ The study of history places too much emphsis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten.”

[synopsis]

[writing]
The author claims that significant historical events and trends were made by groups of people rather than the famous few, hence we should emphasize the former than the latter. After a close scrutiny of the human history, I am inclined to oppose both of the author's points. I concede that without the masses' contributions, the great people would hardly achieve anything. However, it's the famous few who provide the fundamental impetus to the wheels of the human history.

Admittedly, the masses play an important role in the history.Without the efforts of thousands of ordinary soldiers' brave fight, Allied Countries would not be able to defeat the army of Nazi in the World War II , even under the brilliant leadership of Eisenhower, the Chief Commander of Allied Countries. Without the effective cooperation among ordinary workers, architects would not be able to realize their such wonderful designs as White House, Aswan Dam in Egypt, and the Great Wall in China. Without the supports from the ordinary sailors, Columbus would not be able to survive in the ocean, let alone discovering the mainland of America, opening a new page in the history of America. In brief, ordinary peoples' great power and contributions should never be neglected.

Despite this, from a historical perspective, it's always key individuals who provide the necessary impetus at every turn. Profound scientific inventions and discoveries of the past are nearly all attributable not to forgettable groups of people but to certain key individuals--for example, Copernicus, Newton, Edison, Einstein, Curie. When it comes to seminal sociopolitical events, the speaker's claim finds even less support from the historical record. Indeed, sweeping social changes and political reforms require the participation of large groups of people. However, I would be hard-pressed to identify any watershed sociopolitical event attributable to a leaderless group. History informs us that groups rally only when incited and inspired by key individuals. The American Civil War is a good case in point. No one would deny Abraham Lincoln's pivotal role in the Civil War. It's just the "House law" and "Declaration of the liberation of black slaves" he issued that fundamentally reversed the process of war.

What's more, learning about the key historical figures inspires us to achieve great things ourselves far more than from the common people. The great famous few always possess some precious talents or gifts which distinguish them from the mass such as sagacious wisdom or strong determination. For suppoting example, one may look no further than the Great-the Greek philosopher. His works on logic, metaphysics, ethics, natural sciences, politics, and poetics profoundly influenced Western thought. In his philosophical system, theory follows empirical observation and logic, based on the syllogism, which is the essential method of rational inquiry. Studying his works will undoubtedly satisfy our inexhaustible desire for knowledge.  Another example to illustrate great leadership is fighting against Great Depression during 1930s. In the face of overwhelming objection from different interest groups, Roosevelt was determined to execute the New Deal and finally restored the nation's economy to a booming state. Countless examples demonstrate that the outstanding qualities of the famous people have profound influence on the character shaping of innumerable common people to say the least.

To sum up, just as a Scottish historian -Thomas Carlyle asserts, the history of the world is but the biography of great men. The famous few not only nurture the common people's spirit but also provide visions for the society as beacons. Otherwise when only tracking on groups of people, it's easily to get bogged down in the ocean of the history.

Admittedly, the masses play an important role in the history.

(这一句很赞~句式很好,语义很明确)--for example, Copernicus, Newton, Edison, Einstein, Curie(建议少写两个人,写全名,并且把例子展开). When it comes to seminal sociopolitical events, the speaker's claim finds even less support from the historical record. Indeed, sweeping social changes and political reforms require the participation of large groups of people. However, I would be hard-pressed to identify any watershed sociopolitical event attributable to a leaderless group.

The great famous few always possess some precious talents or gifts which distinguish them from the mass such as sagacious wisdom or strong determination.

The famous few not only nurture the common people's spirit but also provide visions for the society as beacons.
