TOPIC: ARGUMENT142 - The article entitled 'Eating Iron' in last month's issue of Eating for Health reported that a recent study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Further, it is well established that there is a link between large amounts of red meat in the diet and heart disease, and red meat is high in iron. On the basis of the study and the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, we can conclude that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease, then, is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease.

In this assertion, the speaker makes a conclusion that the red meat and heart disease have a correlation. This conclusion is based on two evidence the speaker provided in the argument which are all specious. This conclusion is not convincing enough.

First of all, one of the speaker's evidence, he or she cites a study of high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease. The author wants to implies us these two situations have an inner connection. However, except for one sentence the author said, there is no evidence to prove this correlation. It is highly possible this is only an incomplete study which cannot give the public a creditable result. Perhaps, the ultimate result is that there is no evidence show an inevitable correlation between  high levels of iron and heart disease.

Secondly, the other evidence the author has shown, a well known knowledge, red meat is high in iron. As far as I know, almost everybody including the little kid and the elder people know the red meat, like beef and mutton, have a high levels of iron. Yet, how many people know what kind of iron is in the red meat, it is combined or uncombined, with a valence of two or three? I think this is a complex question and many of the common people do not know the answer. So that the speaker also do not give us an answer of this question. Even if a high levels of iron really could cause an increased risk of heart disease, then the question as I said does not give us a correct answer of which kind of iron has this effect. Perhaps all kind of red meat do not have the risky iron. Or may be have a little but under a safety standard of contents.

Finally, even assumption all of the evidences the author provided are reasonable, it must be the iron in the right meat lead to the heart disease. Many vegetables and fish are high in iron like spinach and tuna. The author need to prove that the human eat more red meat than other foods and the iron in the red meat is absorbing more than other iron of foods.

In sum, this conclusion is based on two unconvincing evidence and a series of logical flaws which undermine the whole conclusion. To bolster this assertion, the author should to make more study other red meat and a survey of which kind of food are people eating most.
