“Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the lager society. It is more important that they persue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.”
Whether it is more important for scholars and researchers to persue their individual interests than to concern with the contribution of their work to the larger society? The speaker claims that the persuit of individual interests is of more improtance comparing with the social value of their work. I partly agree with the speaker. However, a contrary point reveals that work of scholars and researchers needs to fit in with the larger society to find a position and agreement.
The persuit of individual interests is important in that individual interests not only are the source of inspirations of their work, but also the strength that enforces scholars and researchers to comeover diffculties during their exploration. What’s more, Individual interests, comparing with the social value, purify the motivation of shcolars and researchers and lead to a relatively simple environment of research. Obviously, one only concerns with whether their makes a contribution to the larger society and forces himself to study in some field he has no interest in, he can hardly attain the goal; while someone who has a great interest in a certain category has more possibilities to complete creative works and brings some absolutly new thought to the world. That illustretes the significance of interests especially for scholars and researchers who are supposed to woke out with creative ideas.
On the other hand, the contribution to the larger society is the potential but important requirment of the work in that at least shcolars and researchers need to find their positions and the support of the public, besides the responsibilities as members of the society. First, “no man is an island” (by John Donne), shcolars and researchers are part of the society who has enjoyed a good education and social insurance provided by the country and it is reasonable for them to do something for the society. Then, human beings have a nature and like to be accepted and admired by others, while a work with contributions to society can of course sets them in a higher position and brings them great material paid-back. Last not the least, the contribution to the larger society is the potential requirment of being a great work. This does not mean that social purpoes should be set up in the creating process, but a general intention towards the work. For example, Stephen William Hawking, one of the greatest scientists in the world, who have been interested in science since young, overcomes the physical diffculty to stduy in the theoretical field and have made a huge contribution towards the expandation of what we know about the universe. He feeds back to the society as well as completes his indivdual achievement.
Without individual interests, scholars and researchers cannot truly work on a field and work out creative ideas; without contributions to the larger society, they cannot fulfill their responsibility as a social member and be admired by the public. In a word, both individual interests and social values are of significance.
