The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Excello Food Markets.
"In 90 towns where Excello has food markets, natural-food stores specializing in organic food products—products containing no chemical preservatives and made with foods grown without pesticides—have opened nearby as competitors. Surveys of our own customers reveal a growing concern about foods grown using pesticides or preserved with chemicals. Recently our market in Sun City participated in a local food tasting fair, and 75 percent of the fair goers who visited the Excello booth requested free samples of organic fruit. Such evidence indicates that to increase our profits, we should begin to stock a full line of organic food products in all our markets."
In this argument, the president claims that stocking a full line of organic food products in all their markets could help to increase profits. To support it, he point that he the organic food products nearby are competitive. He also cited the result of the survey in Sun City to show that more people are more interested in organic food. It seems to be reasonable at the first glace, but a careful examination would reveal how groundless it is.
First, the survey the argument based on is open to doubt. As it is only include the customs in Sun City, many other cities are excluded from the survey. Perhaps, people in other place are not interesting in organic food, they may pay more attention on other factors, such as taste. If so, the condition in Sun city can not be applied to the whole country. Thus, producing organic food in all their markets would not be a wise choice. After all, Excello Food Market is a national wide company, market demands in every place should be taken into consideration.
Second, Even if natural-food store is popular all around the country, there is no guarantee that it would bring about a lot profit. As is known to all, profit is the function of expense and revenue. There is no information about the recent condition of Excello Food Markets. It is possible there have few lines to produce organic food. Therefore, a large sum of money has to be paid on introducing new equipment and employing qualified workers. All these cost may over the income these food bring about. In addition, their current working line has to be abandoned, which is a waste of resource.
Third, the writer fails to consider the market condition in the foreseeable future. As more and more stores opens, the competition among producers would become fiercer and fiercer. In this case, the price of such food may decline, and lead to the reduction of the profit.
In sum, what writer claims amounts to weak argument. To bolster it, a national wide survey should be made to prove that organic food is highly demand in all their market. It is also to asses whether the cost of producing such food could impinge its income. To convince me further, I need more information about possible changes in market in the future. Only in this way, can the president make a wise decision. |
