Everyone cares about appearance and clothes. The appearance, as is often discussed, always shows the attitude toward the person. Just in one second can we tell which one is better, when a good-looking guy stand with a sluttery one. And, people even saw one's spirit through one's appealing. Sometimes it works very well, yet it is not always the case.
A general preference for ready-made, inexpensive clothing might indicate a preference for practicality or for saving rather than spending. And a society whose members prefer to wear clothing that is traditional and distinct is one that values tradition over modernization. For example, everyone has a thought that professors of universities should focus on their studies and teaching, and set an sample of hard working, so they usually dressed simply. Meanwhile, rock stars is suspected of leading the trend of fiction, and some kind of outrage than ordinary, so they dressed in luxury, and no matter they like it or not, they pretend to be unique, that means they are number one of the world.
However, as the old Chinese saying "one can not be judged by his appealing", it is not accurate to evaluate one person only by the appearance. Maybe a billionaire in Wall Street dressed so austerities that make you think he/she is just an ordinary worker. In Qin Kingdom of Zhou Destiny, the king, Ren-hao Ying once meet a person dressed in the cloth of slaves. Despite of looking down on him, the king asked him of political problems. Surprisingly, the slave-dressed man, Li-xi Bai, turned to be a great politics. He is praised by the king and finally takes charge of the country.  And, someone even cannot show his/her character in appearance and clothes because of the restrictions objectively. For example, some companies command the employees to dress in the same way, so that they cannot show their personality.
The values is the attitude of all the subjects, including person, case and substance surround one person. Such attitudes and judgments toward subject in order in one's mind, is the value system. Obviously, the value system is deep inside everyone's heart. That is to say, one can not easily identify other's value. Only by ways of long term observation, especially in emergency time can we know one's value steeply.
In conclusion, there has little link between society's value and personal appearance. Yet, it is advisable to study personal value, and it has much to do with society's value.
