ISSUE 144 THE VALUE OF ART VS. THAT OF ART CRITIC

The speaker commands that the artist, rather than the critic, gives the society something of the lasting value. I agree insofar to the artists, through works of art, provide an incomparable role in the true value of arts. However, the speaker, in a sense，overlook the fact that the critic also pushes in the wheels of the development of art, which in return contributes to the lasting value of art. So I assume it is both the artists and the critic that gives the society something of the lasting value.

To begin with, artists accord with the original value and special insight of the nature of the world.
The artist is using media to express unique passion and insight. Poets such as Emily Dickinson and Theodore Roethke, painters such as the American sea painter Winslow Homer, and musicians like blue artist Clarence Leadbelly used arts to express their deepest private feelings and the original value of the work. The work can make deep impact on our senses, spirits and souls and can create the real value to us. But the lasting value of art, but the whole society’s reflection on it.

In considering the art world, it might be more tempting to agree with the speaker. Admitly, the initial value is very much about the artists, but an ever-lengthening honor roll distinguish works first was received as unacceptable of resistant audiences. Van Gogh, two of whose still life paintings have recently broken all records in selling for $50million, sold only one of his paintings during his career. We can’t only ascribe this to the limits of narrow confines of the society , it is, indeed, the lack of good critics that should respond to it. Good critic can help us understand and interpret art, and the special insights that critique has will build a bridge to the society, where the true value will have lasting value. The critic is something like a flitter and an ad. They help to guild the audience which piece of
work worth our time and passion and introduce valuable art to the society. After the “ad” works, the original value created by the artists will be totally recognized and come to the lasting value.

In the long term, however, bad critics wanes the lasting value. Some critics may confines to his own ego or the temporary environment, misunderstanding the intention of the artists, which, unfortunately, will stand in a subordinate role, does a disservice to the art itself or the society. After Adolf Hither read a critical artist about Nietzsche, which misunderstands the Nietzsche’s self-recognized theory into the race theory, he became so pride of his race and created a disaster in the world.

In summary , an excellent critic can also contribute to the lasting value of the artist, and the critics will enhance the values of art and interpret its insight to the whole society. So the society’s timely appreciation for the art is the most significant for the lasting value of the work.
