Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is more important for students to understand ideas and concepts than to learn facts. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. (02/14/07; 02/24/07;12/15/07)

Nowadays, it’s prevelant that teachers are discussing whether to impart more theory or to explain more practical events to students. Although a considerable number of people, holding the viewpoint that students are supposed to spend more time understanding academic concepts, claim that academics make students solve problems at a higher level. As for me, learning facts outweighs learning general theory for students because the former benefits students to deal with puzzles intelligently and practically.

Initially, one issue which makes me oppose it is that practical facts enable us to interpret the intangible theories effectively and efficiently. To students majored in geology, they will definitely confronted with numerous abstract terms of primitive fossils and simple steps to describe or tankle with some objects. In such a circumstance, students who emphasize concepts will evitably spend plenty of time reading and reciting these terms without comprehending them clearly and deeply. On the other hand, active individuals will make effort to seek for various vivid figures or videos explaining about these terms and to attend internship or field investigation to practice what they have learned in class. Obviously, the latter students will indisputably have a greater recognition about the academics.

Another point involves this recognition that mundane reality is more reliable than so called general ideas and concepts. Facts to theories is like ground to skyscrapers and water to fish. Almost all theories originate from practical facts, so the success of a theory can not live without facts. For example, the Bode’s law guided by which the discovery of asteroid was established by Bode who observed the distances in the spacing of the planets hundreds of years ago. Furthermore, ideas or opinions may be wrong temporarily when the facts haven’t been excavated genuinely. For instance, previous textbooks asseredt that the Pluton is a planet of the sun. However, scientists remove the Pluto from the list of planets with the newfound facts.

Admittedly, concise understanding about concept and ideas equip students to study readily. One important reason is that academic learning enable them to own a general outline and approachment to cope with difficulties. To some extent, these mature and universal theories are guidances for them. Therefore, books are no longer thicker than they looked.

From what I have stated above, I admit that learning about theories is essential for students since it makes them study easily. Whereas, learning abour facts is more critical than learning about concepts and ideas because the study of facts enrich students’ understanding and cultivate students’ correct assumption about this world.

写得蛮好..例证真的很值得学习...
其实我们俩的模板好像还是有一点不同的,也许在考官有很大区别吧...
