TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
I greatly agree with the author's opinion that the faculty of the university should spending enough time outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, except for some small defects lies in the claim.
When the author exclude some special academic areas such history- researching, literary, and philosophy, the claim will sound impeccable. As to the research of these kinds of professions, it hardly exist the outside environment that can do favor to the research, maybe the academic environment which can make the researchers calm down to probe the truth in university is an umbrella against the temptation of the material profits, and some kinds of science like theory physics or mathematics is just the same, they all need a pure academic circumstance that guarantee the purity of the academic.
But, when it comes to the subject greatly relevant to the practical life, it is sensible to encourage the researchers to pay enough attention to the outside practical environment. It will benefit both the researchers and the students they teach, and it will do good not only to the academic world but also to the practical life.
As we all know that there are always a lot of inspirations to academic research lying in the reality life, take Architecture for example, because a real architecture exist in reality world, and it is build up by pieces of concrete joints and materials, so when we study a new method to construct a building, we cannot isolate ourselves away from the spot where the building is constructed. Only through ceaselessly participating into the process of the construction can make the engineer realize which the most effective method to make the building perfectly stand on the ground is. Maybe someone insists on the importance of the academic research, but it is no doubt that some subject, when it is cut off from the real world, will become valueless. It is the researchers' duty to link the academic to the real world to make the academic research hold more practical value and the practical experience hold more academic value.
When it comes to the students, I will tell you according to my own experiences that a teacher who holds more practical experience can give students more inspirations, and when students attend to their lectures or classes, they will always illustrate a profound issue with everyday life examples, which can make it easier to be understood. In one word, the more the researchers participate into the practical life, the more charming they become.
In modern society, a lot of curriculums are set in the university to train the students to be qualified for the future career, so when the students' teachers have an amount of experience outside the academic world, it will do a great favor to the students. The teacher can impart some knowledge which will never be taught on the text book to the students.
In sum, if the author can exclude some apparently defects lying in his statement, his claim will be greatly welcomed by both the students and the faculty of the universities.
