ISSUE221 - "The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."


Through the study of history, people could find that the life styles of people vary from one period from the other. However, some basic human nature remains the same. Meanwhile, the study of history prevents us from repeating the same grave mistakes as our predecessors did.



Admittedly, people in different periods of time behave differently. They have distinguished technology, tastes and life style. Especially catalyzed by scientific advancement, we are enjoying a more comfortable life. Today, we can google any information by a simple click on the internet, we will never worry that the food would go bad with the refrigerator, and we can reach even the other side of the world within one day by airplane. None of these can be finished in ancient times so efficiently.

Ostensibly, the development of history has made our life extremely different. However, the essential aspects behind the exterior phenomenon are still unchanged all the time, such as ethics, customs and habits which is relatively eternal. Most people nowadays still sublime ethics such as honesty, modesty and bravery, because these ethics are always beneficial in molding a well-round personality. Persons who losses the fundamental ethics are bound to fail. A political leader would fall down when he is disclosed to betray his people; a businessman would suffer bankrupt when he is revealed to sell fake products; a scientist would be condemned when his researches threaten people’s life. Therefore, there are some common principles that the ancient people and we must observe to all together.


Besides, people's pursuit for truth and beauty remains the same. Perhaps, the contents of people's researches are quite different, the main purpose to do such researches has few changes-- aiming to come closer to truth. Similarly, people may use different art forms to express their feelings. However, the essence behind forms is the same-- longing for beauty. From this perspective, it is reasonable to conclude that people in one period are of few essential differences from people who lived at any other time in history.


Finally, the speaker overlooks certain equally important benefits of studying history. Learning about the strategies from the famous work “The Art of War” from the ancient Chinese author Sun Tzu would help today’s top leaders, especially military commanders, to operate more efficiently and effectively on military affairs; analyzing the historical trend of voter turnout would help American government to solve the problem of low voter turnout from the fundament and essence; studying the scientific advances made through history would help the society accelerate the speed of scientific development. All the fact point out that history is the best teacher.




In sum, not until people realize we have no essential difference with our predecessors, can they be wiser and smarter in dealing with modern affairs with the help of experience absorbed from the history.

文章给我的感觉是流畅，一路说下来，没有可停留的地方，因为自然。
