Issue 28
“Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little.”

WORD 540

Facts are truths of past occurence and also the proofs provided to infer or interpet theory. Facts are the bases of science. While ideas, trends, and concepts are for analyzing facts. They all connected closely together, one should not learn the facts or the ideas, concepts respectively. But it is more important that students should apply the facts by using ideas, trends, and concepts, rather than rote the facts.
That is not to say memorizing facts is not important, in fact it has been shown millions of time it is quite significant. For the medical history, it is the manifestation of diseases give doctors the experience, so they can memorize it, deduce it with other manifestations and in the end conclude a medical theory. Another example is that when it comes to history course, most of the learning is memorizing the past facts- from revolutionary events, significant discoveries to a vital figure. People learn numerous facts , find out the similarity and then make a conclusion on history to help human being learn more lessones of it and faciliate the society to develop much better. In Maya tribe, Mayan do not record their history in any parchment, bamboo or paper, they passed through their history and civilization from mouth to mouth. In this oral- based culture, memorizing facts is actually an intergal part.
In nowadays, the 21 century is called “ Information Age”. In these days, the information explodes at a speed of light. We are no longer in the time of getting information only by scripts or newspapers. Medias- newspapers, magazines, internet, cellphones- are growning up like mushrooms. The date has never been so easily to get like now, so people invent storadge like U disk as the extension of our brain, so we do not need to rote millions of facts anymore. That’s why people learn ideas, concepts and trends instead of facts. In fact, one single concept could contain thousands of facts. By understanding the concepts, students can infer more facts behind them. Such like mathematics, students can understand the essential part of the formulas, even he can remeber one of them when he is taking an examination, he can still infer the formula by himself. And thus it enhance the application of the formula when students solve a problem.
In modern academic disciplines, there is always new theory of other discipline quoted in another. At this time, students should focus on the concepts more instead of roting the facts, which of course a totally different and difficult field the students unfamiliar with. Students are supposed to apply the theory to their own major. And the theory is supposed to faciliate the discipline. For instance, the economic became more understandable when the concept of mathematics used in it. John Nash discovered Game Theory by inspiration of mathematics.
In sum, the situation today can not ask people to merorize the facts only, the facts are important but not as vital as the sense of learning the concepts and apply them to reality. People are required to become talents in various fields and proffessional on a special field. Thus the ability of digesting and the information and putting it into use shows a really significant part of modern life.
