I do not deny that pragmatic approach help us to accomplish our mission effectively, to a certain extend. Without the precious experience from our precursor, more difficulties and obstacles will force us to detour on our way to destination. However, without ideal, how to define our destination, and maybe we-mankind will not stand upon the great civilization that evolved generations by generations. Thus, idealism is just as crucial if not more so, as pragmatism to human beings for long-term success in any endeavor, whether it be in academy, society, or business and politics.
To begin with, experience and the character of being practical of person are definitely considered as important, which is especially emphasized in today's fierce competition and prompt pace of life. For example, in most MBA courses, the core classes are not focus on how to instruct the student to dream and construct their future or career, but how to execute effectively. And more expensive the courses are, the more time will be spent on case study and practice instead of theory learning, namely the students are all directed to be effect-oriented, and apprehensive to be so called ' pedant '. Surely, it is a shortcut that our predecessor's experience are utilized when we face to and handle issues, and being pragmatic help us to ship toward our goal more efficient. By the retrospect of our history, it would be clear to conclude that the process of industrialization and automation, which idolize and pursue the principle of practicability and effectiveness, have dramatically accelerated the evolving and improvement of human beings.
Further more, admitting that pragmatism has its significant impact on human, what I want to accentuate yet is the idealism, compared to practicability, is at least not less consequential to human today's achievement and the magnitude of civilization. To image the oldest man and woman, who were naked and inhabited with other animals together in the aboriginal forest, survive by hunting and eating the raws, if without mankind's intelligence, that cause thinking and the appetite to improve, abstractedly speaking, no ideals, we perhaps would not have witnessed the changes of civilization including from dressing, utilizing of fire, agriculture to industrialization, landing on the moon, universal information net, and even that we can take the GRE test based on computer located everywhere of the world.
To here I want to account that both the pragmatism and the idealism are pivots to us and we can not ignore the importance of any of them. Like Albert Einstein once said:"I was not great, but stood on the shoulders of giants. Yet I have the ideal to pursuit truth by all my life". I consider the former of this sentence presents the principle of pragmatism, with the latter idealism. And additionally, comparatively speaking, the simpler, more immediate options help to perform mission in short-term goals, and the valuable ideas help to scheme our blueprint.
All in all, pragmatism and idealism are born to be paradox, both of them have noteworthy contributions to us, to say the ideal approach should be supersede by simper and more immediate options is one-side. In order to leave the offspring better environment and life. Every generation has the responsibility to consider the change and improvement as possible, where the idealist is required as fundamental. |
