TOPIC: ARGUMENT25 - The following appeared in a memo from the mayor of the town of Hopewell.

In the argument, the author claims that Hopwell should build a golf course and resort hotel to improve economy as Ocean View has done. At first glance, the reasoning seems to be plausible, but further scrutiny reveals that the argument is based on several unwarranted assumptions and critical flaws, which undermine the validity of the reasoning.

Firstly, the author is engaged in "after this ,therefore, because of this"
reasoning. The line of reasoning is that because the foundation of the municipal golf course and resort hotel happened before the economy development, the former caused the latter. However, the reasoning is fallacious unless other possible causal factors have been considered and ruled out. It is entirely possible that it is the national economy growth result in the tourism increasing and the tax revenues rise mainly because the tax rate has recently risen. The author provide no evidence to rule out these possibilities so that it is of little responsibility to make such a hasty conclusion.

Secondly, the author may confuse the cause and effect concerning the recent developments in Ocean View. Perhaps it is the other way around. It is possible that the economy development and tourism rise lead to the construction of the golf cause and hotel.


Furthermore, even if the golf course and resort hotel somehow contributes to the tourism rise and economy improvements, the author take it for granted the trend in Ocean View during the last two years will continue in the future. There are lots of factors involved in the economy growth. Perhaps the Ocean View enjoyed the tourism growth through the unexpected good climate, which will not be ensured in the next year. The author also fails to account for the time to receive the
mass investment of the golf course and hotel. Hence, the assumption that the trend will continue is unwarranted to make any conclusion.

Finally, the argument rest on the gratuitous assumption that what happens in Ocean View will certainly evolve in Hopwell. Perhaps these two locations have different climate and natural resources. They may enjoy different political, economy and culture condition, which will make the things different. In absence of these information, the assumption turn out to be a false analogy.

To sum up, the argument suffers several logical fallacies which highly weaken its cogency. To bolster the conclusion, the author should provide more evidence to confirm the logical relationship as follow: (1) the golf courses and hotel uniquely result in the economy growth; (2) the growth can at least last for several years; (3)the experience in Ocean View can be transplanted to the Hopwell.
