TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

The boundary between the just and the unjust laws are always vague: even for the same clause, it might be regarded in quite different ways in various situations. One might find the laws crucial in some cases, but to ensure the general justification, the laws cannot involve all kinds of specific aspects of the society. Therefore, the statement to obey the just laws and disobey the unjust ones, although sounds beautiful, needs some more revision.

Admittedly, the world today is not a harmonious family. From the standpoint of the modern conception of humanity, quite a lot of laws in many places are playing a role of unjust evil. The laws in Afghanistan, for example, put women in a inferior position. The fundamental rights of the female Afghanistani as human beings are seriously offended by the laws. Even several years ago, women in Afghanistan had to veil their faces and the communication with the male except from their husbands was seriously limited. They are forbidden to go out for work, cannot enjoy free marriage, or even take the taxi with a man driver. It sounds absurd by most people growing up in the democratic social ethos. In this era which is regarded highly civilized, this type of laws, regardless of the human rights, is undoubtedly the very unjust ones. For that matter, to disobey is far beyond being enough; the resistance and overthrow are wanted.

But as a matter of fact, the law in Afghanistan is a quite specific example. Laws in this modern word have involved multiple aspects, both just and unjust. The just laws in one place might become the unacceptable crime in another one. Moreover, even the same law can be regarded in different ways under various circumstances. In this case, any attempt to distinguish the boundary of the two sides is almost vain.

In the world today, laws are generally used to keep the order of a society, and hence the normal life of people. Yet it does not mean that the laws can fit in every situation and every one. For example, the sever limitation of abortion in some places might be annoying for many young girls who are unfortunately sexually offended: they are the victims themselves, and why should they have to be responsible for this kind of unexpected pregnancy and the heavy acerbic critics from the society? But on the other hand, in some countries, the abortion is regarded as a normal operation as others. Besides this type of laws distinguished in different places, some general laws sharing by most people can be regarded unjust in some cases. When one, just like the hero of the novel, the miserable world, is starving to death, he would be jailed like others that commit crime with malicious motivation. Many people who hear of this kind of news might feel unjust and discouraged. Admittedly, laws sometimes are not that just for people: what the laws embody is just cruelty. Yet few can dispute that it is inevitable for any rules targeting in ensuring the benefits of the majority. Therefore, despite all the sense of sympathy or sorrow or pains, we have to tolerate it.

So what we can do to the just and unjust sides of laws is not as simple as a selection of obeying or disobeying. Actually, the law must be obeyed after legislated. We cannot totally determine what we should do in front of the laws. Moreover, laws must not be amended without meticulous consideration despite some regretting consequences for some certain situation as well. Imagine a world that people can determine what is the true justice in their minds according to every difference instances, and the disobeying of the law is tolerated. People could kill others for revenge; the stealing and robbing are tolerated because of the poverty. What can be used as a common standard for the public order then? Perhaps anyone that is committed the crime had a touching story as a motivation, and then they can be absolved of all their crime? In fact, laws can function well only when seriously obeyed by people. What a world need more is something sensible and sever to make the crime penalized and the justice announced, which would probably lead to the unjustness and cruelty to some extent. However, compared with all the possible disorder, to accept the bilateral characteristics is the most reasonable attitude toward the law for every person.

In sum, the laws are not the solace for people, it is the rules. The thought that we should choose some aspects to obey is bound to ignore the dignity of the juries, and destruct the general rules of the society. The laws need continuing amendment to fit in the situation better, but it is a matter that calls for meticulous consideration rather than the free choice for every common one.
