TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

The speaker alleges that professions in college should be required to work outside the academic world for improving the quality of education. To some extent, I find this claim is specious because it neglect the characteristics of some subjects which aims are not pragmatism. On the contrary, I agree with this assertion insofar as professors get a better understanding about differences between the academy and the requirement of work. What's more, a job related experiences can also update professors' obsolete knowledge and which, on the other hand, surely prove the quality of education.

Firstly, jobs, to professors, can decrease the gap between academy and work. Currently, companies always require their applicants have some relevant experiences in certain area. Why? Because the knowledge we have learned in class may quit far away from reality and the study in college mainly stays on the academic level which, more or less, may quarantine the study from the reality. Therefore, if professors in college could have a experience in professions relevant job, they will know how to teach at a practical level and impartial the latest technology to their students, and, of course, our students will benefit a lot from it due to professors' experience.

Secondly, since today's world is rapid developing, professors' knowledge may be out of date. However, jobs always require the optimal solutions which ask for the latest and advanced technologies to improve the current conditions. Hence, if they get a chance to work in his profession relevant area, professors have update their knowledge to meet the job's requirements, and students will get a reliable and effective path to run after the latest trends in their professions relevant area at work. Besides, students equipped with job relevant knowledge also cater to the companies' tastes.

The speaker, however, dismiss some subjects purely intend on academic level such as math, physics or arts. In these areas, professions need not have a job experiences because these professions are always propelled by experiments and theoretic research, and show little relevance to practical use. Hence, it will be little use for professors to work, and our students, at the same time, can’t benefit from our professors. Moreover, work may impair the concentration of professors on their professions. This is not what we want, hence, whether job experience is useful or not depends on the professions.

On the whole, the engineering professors need to have a job experience because the aims of engineering education are pragmatism. On considering this, job relevant experience will enhance the understanding of professors on their professions. The Professor impart better on their classes which will lead the improvement of education. To the contrary, we do not mean professors in every subject need job relevant skills because some of subjects are only explored on academic level.

All in all, I think most professors who belong to the engineer school should have a job relevant experiences for offering pragmatic students to company. On the contrary, not all subjects should do so. Therefore, asking for job experience to professors depends on the professions they devote in.
